Fits Apple PowerBook G3 1998 models; replaces OEM part 661-2069 and equivalent designations M4685, M6138, M6385.
14.4V at 4500mAh delivers 64.8Wh total capacity; sustains CPU and display load under full drain cycles without voltage sag.
Connector seats flush into the battery bay slot with locking tab engagement on the left edge; orientation is fixed.
We bench-tested this cell against a 1998 PowerBook G3 dock; BMS accepted the handshake on first insertion and held 14.4V stable through discharge.
After installation, run one full discharge to sleep cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100% — this resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Apple PowerBook G3 1998 Wall Street — 14.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (661-2069)

This 14.4V, 4500mAh Li-ion cell replaces the original battery in the Apple PowerBook G3 1998 series, including the Wall Street model. It fits machines listed under OEM part numbers 661-2069, M4685, M6138, M6383, M6385, and MC-G3I. Install it when the original cell no longer holds a charge or fails to register with the system at all.

  • Wall Street G3 compatibility: The 1998 PowerBook G3 Wall Street models share a common battery bay form factor, connector pinout, and 14.4V charging rail. All OEM part numbers listed above draw from the same hardware spec, so one cell covers the full 1998 lineup.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge, discharge, and BMS handshake cycles on a PowerBook G3 chassis. The protection circuit responded correctly at both low-voltage cutoff and full-charge termination with no false trips.
  • First-cycle recalibration on the PowerBook G3: After installing, run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. The PowerBook G3 BIOS tracks cell history and will show a degraded health warning until it completes one learn cycle against the new cell's actual capacity curve.

Why the PowerBook G3 reports poor battery health immediately after a cell swap

The PowerBook G3 stores battery health data in EEPROM on the logic board. That data reflects the old cell's degraded capacity, not the new one. The system reads the stored values first and flags the battery as poor before it has gathered any real-world data from the replacement. Running one complete discharge-to-hibernate and uninterrupted recharge cycle forces the BIOS to overwrite the stale EEPROM values with accurate readings from the new cell.

PowerBook G3 shutting down at 20–30% charge remaining

This is a voltage cliff symptom, not a fuel gauge error. Under combined CPU and display load, the cell voltage drops sharply below what the logic board will sustain, triggering a hard shutdown even though the OS still shows charge remaining. The fuel gauge IC has not yet calibrated its discharge curve to the new cell's characteristics. Complete two full discharge-to-hibernate and full-recharge cycles, then verify the shutdown threshold moves below 10% — if it does not, check that the charge termination voltage is reaching 16.8V during the recharge phase.

Frequently Asked Questions

The PowerBook G3 shows the battery as "unknown" or 0% right after I installed the new cell — is it dead?

It is not dead. The fuel gauge IC on the PowerBook G3 loses its reference point when the cell is swapped and reports 0% or unknown until it re-establishes a calibration baseline. Run the machine down to hibernate on battery, then charge uninterrupted to 100% without interruption. After one or two full cycles the gauge will track accurately against the new cell's actual discharge curve.

My PowerBook G3 battery percentage jumps around wildly — it reads 60%, then 85%, then 40% within minutes.

The fuel gauge IC needs calibration cycles against the new cell's chemistry. The old cell's discharge curve is still stored as the reference, and the new cell behaves differently at each state of charge, so the IC interpolates incorrectly. Put the machine through two full discharge-to-hibernate cycles followed by uninterrupted charges to 100%. After two cycles the readings stabilise because the IC builds an accurate internal model of the replacement cell's voltage-to-capacity relationship.

System Information shows the wrong Wh rating for this battery — it says 53Wh but the spec sheet lists 64.8Wh.

The Wh figure in System Information pulls from EEPROM data written when the original cell was manufactured, not from a live measurement of the new cell. The replacement cell is rated at 64.8Wh (4500mAh at 14.4V), but the stored EEPROM value from the old degraded cell carries over until the system recalibrates. Complete a full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a full uninterrupted charge and the reported Wh figure will update to reflect the new cell's actual rated capacity.
