Why the Eee PC 901 reports poor battery health immediately after a cell swap

The Eee PC 901 stores charge history and health data in the battery's EEPROM. When a new cell is fitted, that EEPROM carries factory defaults, not real-world cycle data — the BIOS reads this as degraded or unknown. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Running the battery learn cycle (full discharge to hibernate, full uninterrupted charge) writes fresh calibration data and clears the warning. After two cycles, the health indicator stabilises.

After one complete discharge-and-charge cycle, the fuel gauge IC recalibrates its low-voltage endpoint and the shutdowns stop.
