Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

NorthStar Aries Series — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (DR36)

This is a 12V, 3800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for NorthStar Aries series laptops and notebooks. It replaces OEM part numbers DR36 and DR36S. Capacity is rated at 45.6Wh, matching the original cell specification.

  • Aries series compatibility: The DR36 and DR36S share the same voltage rail, connector pinout, and BMS handshake across the Aries laptop line. Swapping either OEM part number for this cell requires no adapter or wiring modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on Aries series hardware. The BMS handshake completed without fault codes, and the charge controller accepted the cell without triggering an unknown-battery lockout.
  • Post-install calibration cycle: After fitting this battery, run one full discharge to the hibernate cutoff point, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This step resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after most cell swaps on Aries hardware.

BIOS reporting poor battery health after fitting a new cell

The Aries BIOS reads health data stored in the battery's EEPROM. When a new cell arrives, that EEPROM holds either factory defaults or no learned data — the BIOS flags this as poor or unknown health. This is a data mismatch, not a fault with the new cell. Running one full discharge-to-hibernate followed by a full uninterrupted charge gives the BIOS enough cycle data to update the health status correctly.

Laptop shutting down at 20–30% charge shown on screen

This happens when the cell voltage drops sharply under combined CPU and display load before the gauge reaches zero — known as a voltage cliff. The fuel gauge IC is still reading the old cell's discharge curve, so the percentage shown is inaccurate. After one or two full calibration cycles, the gauge IC maps the new cell's actual curve and the early shutdowns stop. If shutdowns persist past three full cycles, check that the charge controller reached a confirmed 12V at the end of the last charge.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Aries laptop shows 0% or "unknown battery" in Windows immediately after fitting the new DR36 — is the battery faulty?

It is not a faulty cell. The fuel gauge IC in the Aries reads EEPROM data written by the previous battery, and a fresh cell has no matching history loaded yet. Run one full discharge to hibernate cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that first complete cycle the OS fuel gauge recalibrates against the new cell and the 0% or unknown reading clears.

The system info screen shows the wrong Wh rating after I installed the replacement — it says something different from 45.6Wh.

The Wh figure displayed in system info comes from the EEPROM data embedded in the battery, not a live measurement. The EEPROM on a replacement cell can carry a rated value that differs slightly from the actual chemistry. The cell itself delivers the correct 45.6Wh capacity — the mismatch is a reporting difference only. Run two full discharge-charge cycles and check whether the BIOS battery report updates; on most Aries units it will correct after the learn cycle completes.

Charge stops at around 80% and the Aries laptop won't charge higher — what is causing this?

On many Aries units the BIOS includes a firmware-controlled charge limit, often enabled by default or activated after the system detects a cell swap. This limit sits in the BIOS power settings, not in the battery hardware. Enter the BIOS setup at boot, navigate to the battery or power management section, and disable or raise the charge threshold. If no setting is visible, check whether a NorthStar or OEM utility installed in Windows is enforcing the 80% cap and disable it there.
