Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

VeriFone TOPAZ — 14.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (23149-01)

This is a 14.4V, 1500mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the VeriFone TOPAZ countertop payment terminal. It slots in as a direct swap for part number 23149-01 — the original cell used in TOPAZ units deployed at retail point-of-sale. The battery powers the terminal during operation and keeps it running through brief power interruptions at the checkout counter.

  • TOPAZ platform fit: The TOPAZ uses a 14.4V multi-cell Ni-MH pack with a specific connector and BMS handshake. Cells outside this voltage range will not complete the terminal's internal power negotiation — the unit will refuse to boot or will fault on startup.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through a full TOPAZ boot sequence and live transaction simulation. The BMS accepted the handshake without faulting, the charge IC entered normal top-off mode as expected, and the terminal completed PCI boot without interruption.
  • First deployment tip for TOPAZ: After installation, complete one full transaction cycle before putting the terminal into a live queue. The TOPAZ maps battery capacity during normal operation and needs at least one complete power cycle to calibrate the charge indicator correctly.

Why the TOPAZ reboots mid-transaction after a battery swap

The TOPAZ receipt printer draws a sharp current spike when it fires — enough to trip the BMS overcurrent threshold on a pack that hasn't completed its first full charge cycle. The terminal reads this as a voltage fault and resets. This is not a faulty battery. Charge the pack fully before first use, then run one complete transaction including a printed receipt. After that cycle, the BMS calibrates its cutoff curve to the terminal's actual load profile and the reboot behaviour stops.

Terminal not powering on after sitting unused in a drawer

Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–3% per day. A TOPAZ terminal left unused for several weeks can drop the pack below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 10.5V for a 14.4V Ni-MH pack. At that level, the BMS locks the cell out as a protection measure and the terminal shows no response on power-up. Connect the terminal to mains power and leave it on charge for a minimum of 4 hours before attempting to boot. Most packs recover fully from this state if the cell voltage hasn't dropped below 9V.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TOPAZ terminal keeps rebooting every time it prints a receipt — is the new battery faulty?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a bad cell. The printer motor pulls a sharp current spike that the BMS reads as a fault on a freshly installed pack before it has completed its first full charge cycle. Charge the battery to 100% on mains power, then run one complete transaction with a printed receipt. That single cycle calibrates the BMS cutoff to the TOPAZ's actual load profile and the reboot behaviour stops.

The charge indicator on my TOPAZ has been stuck at 99% since I installed the new battery — what's wrong?

Nothing is wrong. The TOPAZ charge IC enters a top-off mode on a new Ni-MH cell and holds the display at 99% until it confirms the pack is fully saturated. This is normal charge controller behaviour for Ni-MH chemistry and can take 30–60 minutes longer than you'd expect. Leave the terminal on mains power until the indicator moves to 100%, then complete one full power cycle to let the terminal map the new pack's capacity curve correctly.

My TOPAZ won't finish its PCI boot sequence after I fitted the replacement battery — it just loops at the startup screen.

The TOPAZ PCI boot sequence includes a battery handshake check, and a pack that hasn't completed its first charge cycle can fail that check — the terminal loops rather than faulting hard. Connect the terminal to mains power and allow the pack to charge fully before attempting to boot. Once the battery reaches full charge, the handshake completes and the terminal advances through the PCI sequence normally. If it still loops after a full charge, verify the connector is fully seated — a partial connection drops enough voltage to trigger the same fault.
