Fits Gemalto Magic 3 W and Magic 3 M8 terminals, replaces OEM part numbers A0285A, U0156783, and A0170A.
This 3.6V, 700mAh Ni-MH cell delivers 2.52Wh — enough capacity to power a full merchant shift of card transactions without midday recharge.
Connector slides straight into the battery slot with a positive tab lock; no adapter or modification needed for either Magic model.
We bench-tested the pack on a Magic 3 W simulator — BMS accepted the charge cycle in under two hours with no fault codes.
After installation, complete one full transaction cycle before live deployment — the terminal maps battery capacity during normal operation and requires at least one full power cycle to calibrate the charge indicator correctly.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Gemalto Magic 3 W / Magic3 M8 — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (A0285A)

This is a 3.6V 700mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Gemalto Magic 3 W and Magic3 M8 wireless payment terminals. It matches OEM part numbers A0285A, U0156783, and A0170A. The battery slots into the terminal's rear compartment and restores field operation for merchants processing card transactions away from a fixed power source.

  • Magic 3 W and Magic3 M8 fitment: Both models run the same 3.6V battery bay, share the same connector pinout, and use the same BMS handshake protocol — one cell covers both terminals without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through repeated transaction sequences including receipt printing and wireless data transmission. The BMS held stable across the combined draw peaks and did not trigger overcurrent cutoff during printer motor engagement.
  • First deployment tip for payment terminals: After installation, run one complete transaction cycle — including a receipt print — before deploying in a live environment. The terminal maps battery capacity during normal operation and needs at least one full power cycle to calibrate the charge indicator correctly.

Terminal rebooting mid-transaction after battery swap

When a new Ni-MH cell has not yet been conditioned, its internal resistance is slightly elevated. The receipt printer motor draws a sharp current spike at the moment of engagement — on a high-resistance cell, that spike can pull the terminal voltage low enough to trip the BMS overcurrent protection. The terminal interprets this as a fault and reboots. Running two or three full transaction cycles brings cell resistance down and eliminates the trip threshold issue.

Terminal not powering on after sitting unused in a drawer

Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–3% per day without active use. A terminal stored for several weeks can arrive at a voltage too low for the BMS to allow a normal boot — it presents as a completely dead unit with no screen response. Connect the terminal to its original charger and leave it on charge for a minimum of 90 minutes before attempting to power on. If the charge indicator does not respond within 10 minutes, the cell voltage has likely dropped below 2.8V and the charge IC needs more time to trickle-charge the cell back above the recovery threshold before fast-charge begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Gemalto Magic 3 W reboots every time a receipt prints — is the battery faulty?

The printer motor creates a sharp current spike the moment it engages, and a new or recently installed Ni-MH cell has slightly elevated internal resistance that can cause voltage to dip below the BMS trip threshold. The terminal reads that as a fault and reboots. This is not a defective cell — run three or four complete transaction-plus-print cycles and the internal resistance drops into normal range. If reboots continue after five full cycles, check that the battery contacts in the compartment are clean and making firm contact.

The battery indicator on my Magic3 M8 is stuck at 99% and has been for the last hour of charging — is something wrong?

Nothing is wrong. When the charge IC detects a new or deeply discharged Ni-MH cell, it holds the terminal in top-off mode and the display stays at 99% while it delivers a low-rate finishing charge. This phase can last 45–90 minutes depending on how depleted the cell was. Leave the terminal on the charger until the indicator moves to 100% or the charging LED changes state — do not remove it early or the cell will not reach full capacity for the first deployment cycle.

My Magic 3 W terminal feels noticeably warm during a busy transaction period — is the battery overheating?

Warmth during heavy use is normal for this terminal. The combined draw from the wireless radio, display backlight, and receipt printer all run off the same 3.6V cell simultaneously, and Ni-MH chemistry generates mild heat under sustained load. The terminal itself also produces heat from its processor. If the surface is hot to the touch — not just warm — check that the battery compartment cover is fully seated and not blocking airflow around the cell. Monitor whether the terminal throws a thermal warning on screen; if it does, allow a 10-minute rest period before continuing transactions.
