This is a 3.7V 2200mAh Li-ion battery for the Typhoon MyGuide 5500 and MyGuide 5500XL portable GPS navigation devices. It replaces OEM part numbers 029521-83159-7 and B521103. The cell fits the original battery bay with no modification and reconnects to the device BMS via the stock connector.

  • MyGuide 5500 and 5500XL compatibility: Both models share the same 3.7V single-cell architecture, battery bay dimensions (67.89 × 52.40 × 5.52mm), and BMS handshake protocol — one cell covers both variants without any firmware or connector difference.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell on the MyGuide 5500 platform and confirmed the BMS accepted the charge curve without triggering a protection cutoff. The device registered battery presence correctly on first boot after installation.
  • GPS lock and RAM sync before swap: The MyGuide 5500 holds open map data and route state in RAM powered directly by the main battery. Before removing the old cell, save any active route and allow the device to complete a full shutdown — pulling power mid-session drops unsaved data immediately.

Why the MyGuide 5500 loses stored settings after a battery swap

The MyGuide 5500 uses SRAM for volatile storage — this memory requires continuous battery power to retain data. The moment the old battery is disconnected and before the new one seats fully, SRAM loses power and clears. Saved favourites, home addresses, and custom settings stored only in RAM are gone at that point. To protect this data, export or sync to a PC before the swap, then restore after the new battery is charged and the device is stable.

This happens when the replacement cell ships at storage charge — typically 30–40% — below the minimum threshold the boot sequence needs to initialise the GPS module and display. The device draws more current at startup than during idle navigation, so a partially charged cell can pass trickle charge detection but still fail to sustain boot. Connect the device to the charger for at least 90 minutes before attempting to power on. Once the cell reaches approximately 3.9V, the boot sequence completes normally.

The MyGuide 5500 stores favourites and recent destinations in SRAM, which needs live battery power to hold data. The instant both cells are disconnected — even briefly — that memory clears completely. There is no background capacitor to bridge the gap. Before any future swap, export your saved locations via the device's backup function to a memory card or connected PC.

The MyGuide 5500 GPS takes much longer to get a fix after fitting the new battery — what's causing that?

A fresh battery swap clears the assisted GPS cache stored in RAM alongside your other data. That cache holds recent satellite almanac data, which cuts lock time significantly. Without it, the device falls back to a cold start and must download a fresh almanac from scratch — this can take several minutes in open sky. Leave the device stationary with a clear view of the sky on first use and the cache will rebuild; subsequent locks will be faster.

The MyGuide 5500 screen dims and the device restarts on its own during navigation — is this the new battery or something else?

This points to a voltage sag issue where the cell drops below the BMS protection threshold under combined GPS, display, and backlight load. It happens most often if the battery was installed and used immediately without a full charge cycle first. A partially charged cell has less headroom to absorb sudden current spikes from the GPS receiver. Charge the device to 100% before use and confirm the symptom clears — if restarts continue at full charge, check that the connector is fully seated, as an intermittent contact produces the same behaviour.
