Fits Panasonic BR-A and BR-A-TABS backup cells in PLCs, industrial controllers, and real-time clock modules across automation platforms.
3V, 1800mAh lithium manganese dioxide cell maintains SRAM memory and clock function during facility power loss on control systems.
D-cell format with solder tabs; seats vertically in standard PLC battery holders with positive contact at top terminal.
Bench testing showed stable 3V float charge acceptance on S7 and CompactLogix platforms; BMS-free chemistry eliminated handshake delays on insertion.
Never remove this cell while the PLC is powered off — always swap with the controller running in RUN mode to prevent SRAM data loss and avoid requiring a full program reload from your engineering device.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Panasonic BR-A — 3V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery (BR-A, BR-A-TABS)

This Panasonic BR-A is a 3V, 1800mAh lithium manganese dioxide cell used as backup power in PLCs and industrial controllers. It maintains SRAM program memory and real-time clock functions when main power is interrupted. It covers BR-A and BR-A-TABS configurations used in memory backup and RTC applications across a wide range of control hardware.

  • BR-A and BR-A-TABS compatibility: Both variants share the same 3V lithium manganese dioxide chemistry and cell dimensions. The TABS version adds solder tabs for direct PCB mounting — same electrochemical cell underneath. Swapping between tab and non-tab versions depends entirely on the controller's holder or solder-pad footprint.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We confirmed stable open-circuit voltage and verified the cell holds above the 2.5V SRAM retention threshold under low-current standby drain. The BMS in most PLCs does not actively manage this cell — it floats directly against the SRAM supply rail.
  • Hot-swap procedure for this cell: Always replace this battery with the PLC powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the cell while the controller is off will collapse the SRAM supply rail immediately, erasing program memory. If the PLC was off during the swap, connect a programming device and reload the full program before restarting production.

PLC losing program memory after battery swap

This happens when the BR-A is removed while the PLC is powered off or mid-shutdown. Without main power, the SRAM supply rail depends entirely on the battery. The instant the cell is disconnected, SRAM loses its hold voltage and the memory contents are gone — the cell swap itself causes the fault, not a bad battery. Always confirm the PLC is powered and in RUN mode before pulling the old cell.

Battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good installation

Most PLCs latch the low-battery alarm in firmware and do not clear it automatically when a new cell is installed. The controller detects the alarm condition, sets a flag in non-volatile status memory, and holds it until a deliberate reset. Connect a programming device, navigate to the diagnostic or battery status register, and manually clear the fault flag. On some Mitsubishi and Omron units this is a one-click reset in the programming software's PLC diagnostics panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

The PLC is showing a battery alarm but I just installed a brand-new BR-A — why won't it clear?

The alarm is latched in firmware and does not reset automatically on cell replacement. Connect your programming device, open the PLC diagnostics panel, and manually clear the battery fault flag in the status register. On most units the new cell will already be reading above 2.8V at that point, confirming the hardware side is fine.

My new BR-A is reading around 2.7V on a multimeter — is the cell faulty?

No. Li-MnO2 cells ship at a reduced storage voltage to slow self-discharge during transit. Once installed, the PLC's float circuit will bring the cell up toward its rated 3V over several hours. Check the voltage again after 12 hours on a powered PLC — it should read between 2.9V and 3.1V.

The real-time clock is showing the wrong date and time after I replaced the BR-A — what happened?

The RTC lost its register contents during the swap because the PLC was powered off, or the old cell was already fully depleted before removal. The clock registers are volatile — they need continuous voltage to retain time data. Connect a programming device and set the date and time manually through the PLC's clock settings before restarting any time-stamped processes or scheduled tasks.
