Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Raymarine Smart Controller — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (2/VH1600 AA)
This 2.4V, 2000mAh Ni-MH battery replaces the original cell in the Raymarine Smart Controller wireless autopilot remote. It fits both the Smart Controller and Smart Controller Wireless Autopilot Remote (OEM refs 2/VH1600 AA and A18119). When the original battery depletes, the remote loses the ability to send autopilot and navigation commands — this cell restores that function.
- Smart Controller and Wireless Autopilot Remote fitment: Both variants share the same 2.4V Ni-MH cell format, connector orientation, and BMS handshake — one part number covers both. The physical dimensions (51.20 × 28.60 × 14.60mm) match the battery bay on each unit without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the bench. The BMS accepted the cell without fault flags, and charge acceptance tracked correctly across multiple cycles at the rated 2000mAh capacity.
- Post-replacement pairing check: After fitting this cell, power-cycle the Smart Controller and verify the autopilot remote re-establishes its wireless link to the SeaTalkng or ACU control unit — Raymarine remotes can drop their pairing state after a full power interruption.
Why the Smart Controller stops responding mid-session at the helm
Ni-MH cells in marine remotes are vulnerable to shallow-cycle degradation. If the original battery was only ever topped up from 70–80% rather than run through full cycles, the cell develops voltage depression — it reports adequate charge but collapses under the RF transmission load. The Smart Controller draws a short current spike each time it sends a command. A degraded cell sags below the controller's minimum operating voltage during that spike, causing the remote to cut out even though the charge indicator showed capacity remaining.
Smart Controller shows full charge but autopilot commands fail to register
This symptom usually points to one of two causes: voltage depression in the old cell (addressed by fitting this replacement), or a lost wireless pairing after battery removal. When the remote loses power completely during a swap, the ACU or p70 control head can drop the paired remote from its active device list. After fitting the new battery, hold the remote within 1 metre of the control unit and follow the pairing sequence in the Smart Controller installation manual — typically a simultaneous button hold until the status LED confirms link. Confirm the remote is registering commands at the helm before returning to the cockpit.

Frequently Asked Questions
My Smart Controller paired fine after the battery swap but the autopilot isn't responding to button presses — what's wrong?
A successful pairing confirmation doesn't always mean the ACU has cleared its previous session state. Power the ACU or p70 control head off completely, wait 10 seconds, then power it back on with the Smart Controller already on and within range. This forces the control unit to re-register the remote as the active input device. If commands still don't register, repeat the full pairing sequence per the installation manual — the LED on the control head should pulse twice to confirm.
The Smart Controller range dropped noticeably right after fitting the new battery — is the cell faulty?
Range reduction immediately after a swap is normal. A new Ni-MH cell ships at storage voltage, typically 1.0–1.1V per cell, which is below the nominal 1.2V operating point. RF transmission power in the Smart Controller scales with available cell voltage. Run two or three full charge-discharge cycles and the cell will reach its nominal 2.4V output — range will normalise at that point without any further adjustment.
The boat's autopilot system triggered an alarm when I swapped the Smart Controller battery — how do I clear it?
Removing the battery from a paired remote can register as a tamper or device-loss event on some Raymarine ACU firmware versions. The alarm clears by executing the standard disarm sequence on the p70 or p70R control head — press and hold the rotary dial for 3 seconds until the alarm indicator extinguishes. If the fault persists, navigate to System > Devices on the control head and remove the Smart Controller entry, then re-pair from scratch to give the ACU a clean device registration.
