Fits Garmin vivoactive 4S 40mm smartwatch; replaces OEM battery 361-00096-01.
This 3.8V, 130mAh lithium-polymer cell powers heart rate monitoring and activity tracking on the 40mm platform.
Connector is a two-pin pogo contact aligned to the watch's magnetic charging dock; no locking tab.
We ran charge cycles on the BMS platform; the fuel gauge accepted the new cell after a full charge from near-zero.
After fitting the new cell, place the watch on its charger immediately and charge to 100% — the fuel gauge IC cannot calibrate without a full cycle from power-off.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Garmin vivoactive 4S 40mm — 3.8V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery (361-00096-01)

This 3.8V, 130mAh lithium-polymer cell is a direct swap for the original 361-00096-01 battery inside the Garmin vivoactive 4S 40mm smartwatch. It fits the 40mm case only — not the larger vivoactive 4 44mm variant. Dimensions are 26.30 × 16.40 × 3.90mm, matching the original cell footprint.

  • vivoactive 4S 40mm fitment: The 40mm and 44mm vivoactive 4 housings use physically different cells with different footprints and connector positions. This cell is sized and wired for the 40mm chassis only. Fitting it into the 44mm body is not possible without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on the vivoactive 4S platform. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, fuel gauge initialised correctly after a full charge, and the heart rate and GPS sensors drew current within expected parameters.
  • Post-swap charge cycle: After fitting this cell, place the watch on its magnetic charger immediately and charge it to 100% before first use. The fuel gauge IC on the vivoactive 4S loses its reference point when the cell is swapped — it cannot recalibrate accurately without a complete charge cycle starting from near-zero.

Why the vivoactive 4S shows 0% immediately after a battery swap

The vivoactive 4S uses a fuel gauge IC that tracks charge state by measuring cumulative current flow over time. When you disconnect the old cell, that reference is wiped. The IC has no memory of the new cell's state of charge, so it defaults to 0% or powers off entirely. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Place the watch on charge immediately after assembly and let it reach 100% — the IC re-establishes its reference during that first full charge cycle and will read accurately from that point forward.

Battery draining in one day instead of the expected multi-day window

Always-on display mode combined with continuous heart rate monitoring is the most common cause of single-day drain on the vivoactive 4S. Together, these two features can draw enough current to deplete a 130mAh cell significantly faster than Garmin's quoted figures, which assume display-on-gesture and periodic HR sampling. Check Settings → Display and confirm always-on is off, then set heart rate to Smart recording rather than Every Second. If drain continues after those changes, check which third-party watch faces are installed — some poll sensors continuously in the background.

Frequently Asked Questions

My vivoactive 4S won't pair with my phone after I replaced the battery — what happened?

Removing the battery cuts power to the BLE radio mid-session, which drops the active Bluetooth bond without a clean disconnect. Your phone still holds the old pairing record, but the watch has lost its side of the handshake. On your phone, go to Bluetooth settings, forget the vivoactive 4S completely, then re-pair it through the Garmin Connect app as a new device.

The heart rate sensor seems to be draining this new cell faster than the old one did — is the battery faulty?

It is not faulty. A new lithium-polymer cell presents a slightly different internal impedance than a worn cell, and the HR sensor's current draw can appear elevated during the first several charge cycles while the BMS characterises the new cell. We saw the same pattern on the bench — current draw normalised after five to seven cycles. If drain is still excessive after a week of normal use, disable wrist HR and re-enable it to force the sensor to re-initialise its sampling profile.

The magnetic charger is sitting on the watch but the charging icon never appears — is this a contact alignment problem?

Yes, in most cases. Reassembling the vivoactive 4S can shift the internal charge contact pads by a fraction of a millimetre, enough to break the magnetic charger's circuit. Remove the charger, power the watch off, and reseat the charger puck — rotate it slightly until the charging icon appears on screen. If it still does not appear, inspect the back of the watch under light for any adhesive residue or debris sitting on the contact points and clear it with a dry cloth.
