Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

TDK Life on Record A73 — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (6AA-HHC)

This is a 7.2V, 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the TDK Life on Record A73 and A73 Boombox portable speakers. It replaces OEM part number 6AA-HHC and restores wireless operation when the original cell no longer holds a useful charge. Capacity is 14.4Wh, matching the original pack.

  • A73 and A73 Boombox compatibility: Both models share the same battery bay geometry, voltage rail, and connector pinout. The 7.2V Ni-MH chemistry is what the speaker's charging circuit expects — swapping chemistry here causes incorrect charge termination and shortens cell life.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through charge and discharge on the A73 platform. The protection circuit terminated charge correctly at full capacity, and voltage held stable under sustained audio output without dropping into low-battery cutoff prematurely.
  • Ni-MH memory management for daily use: Unlike Li-ion, Ni-MH cells in this speaker benefit from a full discharge-to-empty cycle every four to six weeks. Constant partial top-off charging causes voltage depression — the speaker reports full but actual usable capacity drops noticeably over time.

Audio distortion before the battery indicator reaches empty on the A73

Ni-MH cells exhibit a steeper voltage drop curve near end-of-discharge than the A73's fuel gauge is calibrated to track precisely. As the pack approaches depletion, output voltage sags under the amplifier's current draw before the indicator registers low. The amplifier clips at reduced rail voltage, producing audible distortion — crackling or thinning of bass — while the display still shows one or two bars. If this starts happening earlier than expected, run the pack through a full discharge cycle to around 6.0V total pack voltage before recharging.

A73 Bluetooth dropping out at high volume on a freshly charged battery

At peak volume, the A73 amplifier and Bluetooth radio draw current simultaneously — the combined spike can cause instantaneous voltage sag on a weakened or newly installed cell. A new Ni-MH pack sometimes needs two to three full charge-discharge cycles before the cells reach rated capacity and internal resistance stabilises. Until that break-in is complete, the radio module can brown out briefly under high combined load and drop the Bluetooth connection. Run two full cycles before testing at maximum volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

My A73 shows a full charge but the sound starts cutting out and distorting after less than an hour of use — what's happening?

This is voltage depression from shallow cycling on Ni-MH cells. If the battery has been repeatedly topped off without full discharges, the cells develop a false voltage plateau — the pack reads full but usable capacity is a fraction of rated. Run the speaker until it shuts off on its own, then charge fully from flat. Repeat that two to three times and the fuel gauge and actual capacity should realign.

The A73 Bluetooth keeps dropping when I turn the volume up, even with a new battery installed — is the battery faulty?

Not necessarily faulty — new Ni-MH cells need a break-in period. Fresh cells have higher internal resistance until they've completed two or three full charge-discharge cycles, and the combined current spike from the amplifier and Bluetooth radio at high volume causes enough sag to briefly brown out the radio module. Cycle the pack fully twice before testing at loud levels.

My A73 gets noticeably warm during long play sessions and then cuts off suddenly — is that a battery issue or a speaker issue?

Both are contributing. The A73's amplifier generates heat inside the housing, and a Ni-MH pack also produces heat during discharge — together they raise the internal temperature faster than either would alone. When the pack's thermal protection trips, the speaker cuts off abruptly rather than fading out. Let the unit cool for ten minutes before restarting; if it cuts off again at the same point in a session, check that the battery vents and speaker vents are unobstructed.
