Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

ShinewayTech S20A Plus — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (8HR-4/3AU)
This is a 9.6V 3800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the ShinewayTech S20A Plus surveying instrument. It replaces the original 8HR-4/3AU pack used in field survey and geological testing work. Voltage, connector, and cell count match the original specification.
- S20A Plus compatibility: The S20A Plus runs a 9.6V rail from eight Ni-MH cells in series. This pack uses the same 8-cell configuration with the correct connector and BMS handshake the instrument expects at power-on. Swapping to a different voltage or chemistry causes the instrument to reject the pack entirely.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through charge and discharge cycles on the bench. The BMS responded normally to charge termination — delta-V cutoff triggered correctly at full charge, and the pack held voltage under the sustained current draw typical of sensor initialisation and active measurement logging.
- First-use calibration cycle: After fitting this pack, run a full calibration cycle through the S20A Plus instrument menu before heading into the field. The instrument maps battery state during calibration. Skip this step and the battery indicator will trigger premature low-battery warnings on the first measurement session, even with a full charge.
BMS lockout after the S20A Plus sat unused in a carry case for months
Ni-MH cells self-discharge over storage. If a pack sits long enough, cell voltage drops below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 0.9V per cell. At that point, the BMS enters a protection state and blocks charge input entirely. The instrument will not power on and the charger shows no activity. The fix is a slow trickle charge at low current to bring cells back above the BMS recovery floor before attempting a standard charge cycle.
S20A Plus shuts down during active logging even though the charge indicator was high
This happens when sustained sensor load pulls the pack voltage below the instrument's cutoff threshold, even if the indicator read healthy at rest. Ni-MH cells show higher resting voltage than load voltage — the gap widens as cells age or after a partial discharge cycle. If the shutdown repeats, check resting voltage with a multimeter: a healthy 9.6V Ni-MH pack should sit above 9.2V at rest. If it reads below that, the cells are not recovering between measurements and the pack needs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions
My S20A Plus won't charge after sitting in the case all winter — charger shows nothing and the instrument is completely dead. What's wrong?
The Ni-MH cells have self-discharged below the BMS recovery threshold, so the BMS is blocking charge input as a protection measure. A standard charger will not kick in at that voltage level. Apply a slow trickle charge at low current — around 0.1C — for 30 to 60 minutes to bring the cell voltage back above the recovery floor, then connect the standard charger. If the charger still shows no activity after trickle charging, check individual cell voltage: any cell below 0.8V is likely reversed and the pack will not recover.
The S20A Plus powers on fine but resets or cuts out the moment the probe module initialises. Is this a battery issue or a probe fault?
This is almost always the battery. Probe initialisation draws a short current spike that can exceed the BMS trip threshold on a pack that's low on capacity or partially discharged. The BMS sees the spike as an overcurrent event and cuts output to protect the cells. Check resting voltage before probe connection — it should read above 9.2V. If voltage looks fine at rest but the trip still happens, the cells have degraded internal resistance and can no longer deliver the peak current the probe requires, even though resting voltage appears acceptable.
My S20A Plus shows a different battery percentage every time I reboot during a survey session. Is the indicator broken?
The indicator is not broken — it's recalibrating against a new cell voltage profile. The S20A Plus maps battery state using voltage thresholds, and a new or recently recovered Ni-MH pack has a slightly different discharge curve than the worn original. Run the full calibration cycle in the instrument menu with the new pack fitted and allow one complete discharge-to-charge cycle in the field. After that, the percentage readout stabilises and tracks the actual charge state accurately.
