Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Theis TAL Evolution (200) / TAL S — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (08.08.002)
This is a 4.8V, 4000mAh Ni-MH battery pack for the Theis TAL Evolution (200) and TAL S surveying instruments. It replaces OEM part number 08.08.002 using the same cell chemistry, voltage, and connector configuration as the original. Capacity figure is sourced from product data — 19.2Wh total energy.
- TAL Evolution (200) and TAL S compatibility: Both instruments share the same 4.8V power rail, connector footprint, and BMS handshake protocol — which is why a single pack covers both models. Swapping between them requires no modifications.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through the TAL's charge and discharge circuit and confirmed BMS communication, charge acceptance, and cutoff behaviour at the correct low-voltage threshold. No anomalous BMS trips were recorded during sustained sensor load.
- First-use calibration step: After installing this pack, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before field deployment. The TAL Evolution maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings during your first measurement session even when the pack is fully charged.
BMS lockout after the TAL Evolution sits unused in a carry case for months
Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–3% per day at room temperature. After extended storage, the pack voltage can drop below the BMS recovery threshold, which puts the protection circuit into a locked state. In this state, the instrument may not power on at all, or the charger may show no charge activity. To recover, apply a slow trickle charge using a Ni-MH compatible charger at a low rate — the BMS typically re-initialises once cell voltage climbs back above approximately 1.0V per cell (4.0V total for a 4-cell pack).
Readings resetting or dropping out during an active logging session
This is a voltage dropout symptom, not a capacity issue. During sustained sensor load — particularly when multiple probe modules are active — the pack's internal resistance causes a momentary voltage sag. If that sag crosses the instrument's undervoltage threshold, the TAL treats it as a low-battery condition and resets or interrupts the logging session. A cell pack with degraded cells will sag further under the same load, making this failure more frequent as the pack ages. Replacing the pack restores adequate voltage headroom; confirm recovery by checking that the instrument holds stable voltage under full sensor load at startup.

Frequently Asked Questions
The TAL Evolution powers on fine but shuts off the moment I start a USB data transfer to the PC — is this a battery fault?
Yes, this is a known combined-draw failure. USB data transfer adds a simultaneous load on top of active sensor modules, and the combined current pull causes a voltage sag that trips the low-voltage cutoff in the BMS. A degraded pack with higher internal resistance sags further and trips faster. Replace the pack and confirm the instrument holds stable during a transfer — if it still cuts out, check the USB cable for excessive current draw or use a powered USB hub to offload some of that demand.
My charger shows a full charge, but the TAL Evolution throws a low-battery warning within the first few measurements — what's happening?
The instrument maps battery state during its calibration cycle, and if you install a new pack and skip that calibration step, the voltage-threshold indicator is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve. The new pack's slightly different resting voltage reads as "low" until the instrument recalibrates. Go into the instrument menu and run a full calibration cycle before field use — this resets the battery state mapping to the new pack and clears the false low-battery warning.
The pack won't take a charge after the instrument sat in storage for several months — the charger light just stays off or blinks an error. How do I recover it?
Extended storage drops Ni-MH cell voltage below the BMS recovery threshold, and most chargers refuse to begin a standard charge cycle when they detect voltage this low. Use a Ni-MH charger with a dedicated recovery or trickle mode, which applies a low-current pre-charge to bring individual cell voltage back above approximately 1.0V per cell — 4.0V total for this 4-cell pack. Once the BMS re-initialises and the charger detects a valid voltage, it will switch to a normal charge cycle automatically. If the charger still shows no activity after 30 minutes of trickle input, the cells have degraded beyond recovery and the pack needs replacing.
