Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Viavi JDSU Smartclass E1 2M / VDSL ADSL TPS — 4.8V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (21100729 000)
This is a 4.8V 3500mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Viavi JDSU Smartclass E1 2M and VDSL ADSL TPS portable network testers. These instruments are used in the field for E1, ADSL, and VDSL line diagnostics and performance testing. The battery replaces OEM part numbers 21100729 000 and 0718081TPS.
- Smartclass E1 2M and VDSL ADSL TPS compatibility: Both instruments share the same 4.8V Ni-MH cell configuration, connector footprint, and BMS handshake protocol — that is why a single pack covers both platforms without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the Smartclass E1 2M power-on sequence, triggered a full port scan cycle, and monitored the BMS under sustained measurement load. The pack held voltage within spec throughout logging and did not trip the protection circuit during probe initialisation.
- Post-install calibration cycle: After fitting this battery, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument's system menu before deploying to site. The Smartclass maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes the low-battery warning to fire early on the first measurement session, even when the pack is fully charged.
BMS lockout after the Smartclass sat unused in a carry case for months
Ni-MH packs self-discharge during storage. If the Smartclass E1 2M sat in a case long enough, the pack voltage can drop below the BMS recovery threshold, and the instrument will not power on even when connected to the charger. The BMS enters a protection state to prevent cell reversal and blocks normal charge current. To recover the pack, apply a slow trickle charge at the correct voltage using a compatible external Ni-MH charger until the cells reach approximately 4.2V — at that point the BMS re-initialises and the instrument's internal charger can take over.
Smartclass E1 2M shuts down mid-measurement despite a charged battery
This happens when the instrument initiates a new test sequence and the resulting current draw spikes above what an aged or partially discharged cell can deliver without a voltage sag. The BMS interprets the sag as an undervoltage fault and cuts the output to protect the cells. It is not a charge level problem — it is a peak current delivery problem that degrades as cells age. If the shut-off happens consistently at the start of a port scan or line test, check the pack's resting voltage with a multimeter; a healthy 4.8V Ni-MH pack at full charge should read at least 5.4V at rest before load is applied.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Smartclass E1 2M powers on fine but shuts off as soon as I start a line test — is that a battery fault?
Yes, and it is a specific one. The current spike at the start of a port scan or active line test exceeds what an aged Ni-MH cell can deliver without the voltage dropping below the BMS cutoff threshold. The instrument cuts power to protect itself — it is not a charge level issue. Measure the pack's resting voltage before load; a serviceable 4.8V Ni-MH pack should read at least 5.4V at rest, and anything below that under no-load conditions means the cells are no longer delivering adequate peak current.
My Smartclass E1 2M shows inconsistent battery percentage after fitting the new pack — reads 100%, then jumps to 40% on reboot.
This is the instrument's voltage-threshold indicator recalibrating to the new cell's discharge curve. The Smartclass uses fixed voltage points to estimate charge level, and a fresh Ni-MH pack has a slightly different resting voltage profile than a worn original — so the percentage display swings until the instrument logs a few full cycles. Run two complete charge-and-discharge cycles through normal field use, then run the calibration sequence in the system menu; the percentage readout will stabilise after that.
The Smartclass E1 2M powers on and runs measurements fine, but shuts down the moment I connect it to the PC for data transfer — why?
USB data transfer adds a second current draw on top of the active instrument load. When the pack is partially discharged, that combined draw pulls the cell voltage below the BMS protection threshold and the instrument cuts out. This is a known weak point on instruments that were not designed with simultaneous USB and measurement loads as the primary use case. Charge the pack fully before any PC sync session, and if the shut-off still occurs, transfer data with the instrument in standby mode rather than during an active test session — that eliminates the measurement-load component of the draw.
