Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Airbus BLN-19 — 3.8V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This 3.8V Li-ion battery replaces the Airbus BLN-19 in professional portable two-way radios used in commercial and field communications. It carries 6900mAh (26.22Wh) of capacity. The cell format and connector match the original BLN-19 specification directly.

  • BLN-19 platform fit: Airbus portable radios using the BLN-19 share a common voltage rail and BMS handshake protocol. Swapping to this cell keeps the radio's power management circuitry operating within its expected threshold window without requiring firmware adjustments.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through transmit-load draws and monitored BMS response at PTT current spikes. The protection circuit held cutoff thresholds correctly and recovered cleanly after sustained RF output loads.
  • First insertion contact check: If the charger dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Airbus platform requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the BLN-19 radio cuts out mid-transmission on a new battery

When you press PTT, transmit current draw spikes sharply — often two to three times the standby draw. A new cell at storage voltage sits closer to the BMS low-threshold than a fully charged cell does. If the BMS reads that spike as an undervoltage event, it trips the overcurrent protection and cuts power to the radio. This is not a faulty battery. A full charge cycle before the first field use brings the cell to 4.2V and gives the BMS enough headroom to handle transmit spikes without tripping.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting the BLN-19

New Li-ion cells ship at roughly 3.6–3.7V storage voltage, not a full charge. The Airbus radio maps voltage thresholds to bar segments, so a cell at storage voltage reads one bar lower than a fully charged cell at 4.2V. This is a voltage-threshold display issue, not a capacity defect. Run one full charge cycle through the dock and the bar indicator will reflect the correct charge state.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Airbus radio cuts out the moment I press PTT — is the new BLN-19 tripping the BMS?

Yes, this is a transmit-current BMS trip. PTT draw spikes sharply, and if the cell is at storage voltage (~3.6V), the BMS reads the surge as an undervoltage event and cuts power. Charge the battery fully to 4.2V before putting it into service. One complete charge cycle gives the protection circuit enough headroom to handle PTT surges without tripping.

The charger dock is showing a fault LED and won't clear after I inserted the new BLN-19 — what's wrong?

A new cell arriving below the dock's acceptance voltage threshold triggers the fault LED on Airbus chargers. Remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly to complete the BMS handshake. If the fault LED persists, the cell voltage may be too low for the dock to initiate charging — try a different compatible charger first to bring the cell above 3.5V, then return it to the dock.

The radio is dropping to reduced TX power mid-shift even though the battery showed full bars at the start — why?

This is voltage sag under sustained RF output. During extended transmit cycles, cell voltage drops under load faster than the bar indicator refreshes, so the radio's power control circuit reduces TX output to stay within its operating range before the display shows a low-battery state. This happens most on high-duty-cycle shifts with frequent long transmissions. Let the battery cool and reach resting voltage between heavy-use periods to reduce sag depth.
