This is a voltage cliff issue, not a capacity fault. The modem radio and display draw short bursts of high current, and if the fuel gauge IC is still calibrated to the old cell's discharge curve, it misreads remaining capacity. The new cell's actual voltage drops below the shutdown threshold under that load spike before the gauge reaches zero. One full discharge-charge cycle without fast charging resets the coulomb counter and eliminates most of these premature shutdowns.

Device not powering on after the replacement cell sat in storage

Li-ion cells self-discharge in storage. If the cell voltage drops below roughly 2.5V, the BMS enters lockout mode and blocks current flow to protect the cell from damage. The phone appears completely dead — no boot screen, no charging indicator. Connect to a wall charger and leave it for 15–20 minutes before attempting to power on. The charge IC needs to trickle current into the cell long enough to lift it above the BMS re-enable threshold, typically around 2.9V.
