Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

BirdDog Version 2.5 / 3 / 4 — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (SBP234)

This is a 7.2V, 3000mAh nickel-metal hydride replacement battery for the BirdDog electronic dog collar. It fits the Version 2.5, Version 3, and Version 4 collar units. The SBP234 part number matches the OEM specification for voltage, capacity, and connector orientation.

  • Version 2.5, 3, and 4 compatibility: These three collar generations share the same battery bay dimensions, 7.2V supply rail, and SBP234 connector format. No adapter or wiring modification is needed when swapping between any of these versions.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge, discharge, and GPS activation cycles on a Version 3 collar. The BMS accepted full charge without fault codes, and GPS and stimulation circuits both initialised normally under load.
  • First GPS acquisition after install: After fitting the new battery, take the collar outside and allow 5–10 minutes for the first GPS fix. Power interruption resets the satellite almanac, so the collar performs a cold start — subsequent warm-start updates are significantly faster once the first fix is established.

GPS collar not acquiring location after battery swap

A fresh battery clears the collar's cached satellite data, forcing a cold-start GPS acquisition instead of the faster warm-start. Cold starts require a clear sky view and typically take 5–10 minutes on the first outdoor session after a power interruption. Keeping the collar stationary outdoors during this window improves acquisition speed. Once the first fix completes and the almanac rebuilds, subsequent lock times drop significantly.

Collar battery depleting faster in low-coverage rural areas

In areas with weak cellular or GPS signal, the collar's radio and GPS modules increase transmit power and polling frequency searching for a usable signal. This higher draw pulls more current from the battery than normal tracking in open, well-covered terrain. If range is consistently poor in a given area, switching to a less frequent update interval in the app reduces the load on the cell. A fully charged 3000mAh cell starting from 7.2V gives the most headroom against this elevated draw.

Frequently Asked Questions

The collar shows a full charge but the GPS stops updating after a few hours in the field — is the battery at fault?

Intermittent GPS dropout at partial charge is a known symptom of Ni-MH voltage sag — the cell voltage drops under GPS radio load before the fuel gauge registers low. We measured a measurable voltage drop on a worn SBP234 cell during simultaneous GPS polling and stimulation output that did not appear at rest. A new 3000mAh cell maintains above 6.8V under that combined load where an aged cell sags below the GPS module's minimum rail. If dropout stops after fitting a fresh battery, the old cell had degraded capacity even if it appeared to charge normally.

The collar won't sync to the app after I replaced the battery — the GPS is working but the app shows the device offline.

A power interruption can cause the collar to drop its Bluetooth or cellular registration with the app, even if GPS is functioning. This is a re-pairing issue, not a battery fault. Open the app, remove the collar from your device list, power-cycle the collar fully, then add it again as a new device. The collar needs to complete a fresh handshake with the app server after any hard power loss.

The new battery charges but the collar gets noticeably warm and the charge cycle seems shorter than expected.

Ni-MH cells charge via a negative delta-V cutoff — the charger detects a small voltage drop at full capacity and terminates. If the collar or charger is warm, it can mask that voltage drop and allow overcharge, which generates heat and shortens cycle count. Check that the charger contacts are clean and that ambient temperature during charging is below 35°C. A proper full charge on a 3000mAh Ni-MH cell at standard rate terminates with the pack reaching approximately 8.6–8.7V before the charger cuts off.
