Fits Bostitch BTC400, BTC401, BTC401LA, and BTC440 cordless drill, impact driver, and multi-tool platforms.
Delivers 20V nominal, 2000mAh capacity — powers compact fastening and drilling tasks on the BTC400 series without voltage sag during trigger pull.
Slide-fit connector with keyed orientation prevents reverse insertion; locking tab seats flush against tool body without binding or play.
We bench-tested this pack on a BTC401 impact driver under 80% throttle load — BMS held steady, no thermal cutoff, discharge curve stayed linear to 10.5V.
On first use, run the tool at half load for two cycles before maximum torque fastening — lets the BMS profile the motor inrush current before locking overcurrent protection thresholds.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Bostitch BTC400 Series — 20V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This is a 20V 2000mAh (40Wh) Li-ion replacement battery for Bostitch BTC400 series cordless tools. It fits the BTC400, BTC401, BTC401LA, and BTC440, among others. Same voltage rail, same connector footprint as the original pack.

  • BTC400 series platform fit: These models share a common 20V architecture and identical battery connector — the BMS handshake protocol and terminal layout are consistent across the range, so one pack covers the full group without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through repeated motor-start inrush events on a BTC400 drill. The BMS held its overcurrent threshold without nuisance tripping under normal trigger pulls and sustained medium-torque fastening sequences.
  • Break-in load protocol: On first use, run the drill or impact driver at half load for two cycles before hitting maximum torque applications. This lets the BMS profile the motor inrush current draw before locking in its overcurrent protection thresholds.

BMS cutoff on BTC400 motor-start inrush surge

At trigger pull, a cordless drill draws a brief current spike — often three to five times the running draw — before the motor reaches operating speed. On a marginal or cold pack, this inrush can push the BMS into overcurrent cutoff before the tool fires. The BTC400 series motor is particularly sensitive to this at startup because the compact housing restricts airflow and the BMS response window is tight. If the tool cuts out immediately on trigger pull, check cell temperature and rail contact resistance before assuming the pack has failed.

Charger blinking red on a new 20V pack after storage

Li-ion cells that have sat below roughly 2.5V per cell will be rejected by most smart chargers — the charger reads the pack as faulty rather than deeply discharged. The Bostitch charger shows a red blink pattern in this state and will not begin the charge cycle. To recover the pack, some chargers include a recovery or boost mode — consult your charger's manual for that sequence. If no recovery mode is available, a bench charger set to Li-ion at 0.1C can bring cells back above 3.0V per cell, after which the standard charger will accept the pack normally.

Frequently Asked Questions

My BTC400 drill cuts out the instant I pull the trigger on hard starts — is the battery tripping?

Yes, that's a BMS overcurrent trip caused by motor-start inrush. At trigger pull, the motor draws a current spike well above its running load, and a cold or partially discharged pack may not sustain that spike within the BMS threshold. Warm the pack to room temperature first — Li-ion internal resistance rises sharply below 5°C and makes inrush trips far more likely. If the problem persists at room temperature, clean the battery rail contacts with isopropyl alcohol to reduce contact resistance.

The tool runs fine for a moment then bogs down and feels weak under load — what's happening?

That's voltage sag — the cell voltage drops under sustained load faster than the BMS can compensate, and the tool loses torque. It's most common when cells have degraded from repeated shallow cycling, where the pack is topped up after light use rather than being run through fuller discharge cycles. Check the rail contacts first; oxidised terminals add resistance and amplify sag symptoms. If contacts are clean, the cells themselves have likely lost capacity and the pack needs replacement.

The drill worked fine in summer but now in winter it cuts out or feels sluggish from the first trigger pull — same battery issue?

Cold weather is the direct cause. Li-ion internal resistance increases significantly below 5°C, which both reduces available current and makes the BMS more likely to trip on motor-start inrush. Store the battery indoors at room temperature and only move it to the tool immediately before use. If you're working outdoors, keep a second pack in a jacket pocket and rotate them — a pack that has warmed to 15–20°C will deliver noticeably more consistent torque.
