My GL30 shows the battery as 0% or "unknown" right after I installed the new cell — is it dead?
The fuel gauge IC on the GL30 still holds calibration data from the old cell, so it cannot map the new cell's voltage curve until it runs a learn cycle. The battery is not dead. Charge it fully to 100% uninterrupted, then discharge to hibernate cutoff without plugging in. After one or two full cycles the OS gauge will lock onto the correct readings and the "unknown" or 0% reading clears.
Windows reports this battery's Wh rating as different from the 73.26Wh listed — why does the number not match?
The Wh figure Windows reads comes from the EEPROM data embedded in the battery's BMS chip, which stores the rated design capacity from the cell manufacturer. The 73.26Wh in the product listing is the actual measured energy capacity of this cell. These two numbers can differ by a small margin because EEPROM stores nominal chemistry ratings, not bench-measured output. The discrepancy is normal and does not affect charge behaviour or discharge performance.
The GL30 charges to around 80% then stops — is the charger or the battery at fault?
Neither. The GL30 BIOS includes a charge limit setting that caps charging at 80% when battery care or eco-charge mode is enabled in the firmware. Check the BIOS power settings or the Asus battery care utility in Windows and disable the charge limit. Once turned off, the next charge cycle will proceed past 80% and reach 100%.
