Fits Cowon PMP A2 20GB and A2 30GB portable media players, replacing original 3.7V lithium-polymer cell.
3.7V, 3600mAh chemistry restores full playback window on this mid-2000s audio and video player.
Connector seats flush into the battery slot with no locking tab—friction hold only.
We bench-tested this cell in an A2 20GB unit; BMS accepted charge current immediately, voltage held steady across discharge cycle.
After install, insert the charged cell and power on without waiting—unlike later Cowon models, the A2 does not enter deep discharge protection and does not need a trickle charge delay.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Cowon PMP A2 / A3 Series — 3.7V Li-Polymer Replacement Battery

This 3.7V, 3600mAh Li-Polymer battery replaces the original cell in the Cowon PMP A2 20GB, PMP A2 30GB, PMP A3 60GB, and PMP A3 80GB portable media players. These mid-2000s digital audio and video players are known for their audio quality, and a failing original cell is the most common reason they stop functioning. Voltage and form factor match OEM spec at 107.90 × 59.91 × 5.00mm.

  • A2 and A3 platform compatibility: The A2 and A3 share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pin-out, and 3.7V supply rail. The BMS on both models uses the same voltage thresholds for charge acceptance and low-battery cutoff, so one cell covers the full range of these players.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on an A3 unit. The onboard BMS accepted charge current normally, held the full voltage curve through playback, and tripped the low-voltage cutoff at the expected threshold without premature shutdown.
  • Post-swap initialisation on the A2 and A3: After fitting a new cell, charge fully before first use. These players frequently enter deep discharge protection after sitting unused, and the firmware requires a slow trickle charge before it will accept normal charge current — skipping this step leaves the player unresponsive at the charge screen.

Battery percentage jumping erratically after a cell swap on the A2 and A3

The Cowon A2 and A3 use a voltage-threshold gauge — there is no fuel-gauge IC recalibrating coulombs. After fitting a new cell, the firmware maps displayed percentage against a voltage curve it learned from the old, degraded cell. The new cell holds a flatter discharge curve, which the firmware reads as sudden jumps between percentage bands. Run two full charge and discharge cycles and the displayed percentage will stabilise as the firmware recalibrates its voltage reference points.

Playback cutting out before the battery indicator shows empty

The audio amplifier stage in these players draws a higher instantaneous current than the backlight or UI. As a degraded cell approaches end of discharge, its internal resistance causes a voltage sag large enough to drop below the amplifier's minimum supply voltage — even while the indicator still shows charge remaining. The player then shuts down or mutes audio abruptly. A fresh 3600mAh cell at full charge holds a stable voltage under this load, eliminating premature cutoff. If the issue persists with a new cell, confirm the pack has completed at least one full charge cycle to 4.2V before testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

My Cowon A2 won't turn on at all after sitting in a drawer for two years — is the battery dead or is something else going on?

Almost certainly deep discharge protection. Li-Polymer cells left unused for extended periods drop below the BMS's minimum recovery voltage, and the A2 firmware won't power on until the cell climbs back above that threshold. Connect the original charger and leave it for at least 30 minutes without pressing the power button — the device will trickle-charge the cell back into the normal operating window before switching to standard charge current. If the charge indicator light still shows nothing after 30 minutes, the original cell is likely unrecoverable and needs replacing.

My A3's battery percentage jumps from 60% straight to 15% mid-video — why is it doing that?

The A3 has no fuel-gauge IC; it reads percentage directly from cell voltage. A cell with elevated internal resistance from age shows a normal resting voltage but sags sharply under the amplifier and screen load during video playback, pushing the voltage reading down by a full percentage band in one step. This isn't a firmware bug — the cell can no longer hold its voltage under load. Replace the cell and confirm it reaches 4.2V on a full charge before testing playback again.

The Cowon A2 charges fine but the battery drains noticeably faster when I'm playing video compared to audio-only — is that normal?

Yes, and the gap is significant. Video playback on the A2 drives the LCD backlight at full brightness, the video decoder, and the audio amplifier simultaneously — combined draw is roughly three to four times higher than audio-only with the screen off. This is normal behaviour, not a battery fault. If drain during video still seems excessive with a new cell, reduce screen brightness and confirm the display timeout is active, which cuts the largest single draw between tracks.
