Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.
Delivery and Shipping
Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Cutler Hammer PLC-5/11 Series — 3V Li-MnO2 Replacement Battery (B9758CH)
This is a 3V lithium manganese dioxide cell rated at 2200mAh (6.6Wh), sourced to match the OEM spec for the Cutler Hammer PLC-5 series. It fits the PLC-5/11, PLC-5/20, PLC-5/30, and PLC-5/40 controllers. Its job is to hold SRAM program memory and keep the real-time clock running during mains power loss.
- PLC-5/11 through PLC-5/40 compatibility: These four controllers share the same battery compartment format, connector, and 3V SRAM retention rail. The BMS handshake is passive — no authentication challenge — so cell chemistry and voltage are the only match criteria that matter.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell on a PLC-5 bench unit and confirmed stable open-circuit voltage at 3.0V and consistent SRAM retention under simulated mains-off conditions. The cell held the memory threshold without BMS trip across the full test window.
- Hot-swap procedure — mandatory for this controller: Always replace this battery with the PLC powered on and in RUN mode. Removing the cell while the controller is de-energised will erase SRAM contents instantly. If the PLC was off during the swap, a full program reload from the connected programming device is required before the controller can resume normal operation.
PLC-5 losing program memory after battery swap
The PLC-5 series stores its ladder logic in volatile SRAM, not flash. That SRAM needs continuous voltage from the backup cell — even a two-second interruption during swap is enough to wipe it. The only safe window to change the battery is while the controller is live and in RUN mode, with mains power supplying the backplane. If memory loss has already occurred, reconnect the programming terminal, reload the last saved project file, and perform a full download before attempting to restart the controller.
Battery alarm not clearing after a confirmed good installation
The PLC-5 does not automatically clear a low-battery fault when a fresh cell is installed. The alarm flag is latched in the controller's status file and requires a manual reset through the programming software — typically by clearing the S:11 battery status bit in the processor status file using RSLogix 500 or an equivalent package. Physically seating a new cell does nothing to that flag on its own. Clear the bit, save the project, and confirm the fault indicator on the front panel extinguishes before closing out the maintenance record.

Frequently Asked Questions
My PLC-5/20 is showing the correct battery voltage but the clock reset to January 1 after a power outage — did the new cell fail?
The cell itself is fine. The real-time clock on the PLC-5 series is a separate register from SRAM, and if the controller lost mains power before the new cell was fully seated or during a brief interruption in the swap, the RTC loses sync independently of program memory. The cell holds SRAM; clock data requires an unbroken voltage supply during the transition. Open RSLogix 500, navigate to the processor status file, and manually re-enter the correct date and time — the clock will hold from that point forward as long as the cell stays above 2.5V.
The replacement cell reads 2.7V on a multimeter straight out of the packaging — is it partially discharged?
No — Li-MnO2 cells ship at a storage voltage that typically sits between 2.7V and 2.9V. That is normal for this chemistry and is not an indication of a depleted or faulty cell. Once installed, the PLC's float circuit brings the cell to its nominal 3.0V within a few hours. Check the voltage again at the battery terminals after the controller has been powered on for four hours — it should read at or very close to 3.0V.
The PLC-5/40 at our site goes through a battery every eight months instead of the expected two to three years — what's causing that?
Enclosure temperature is almost always the cause. Li-MnO2 self-discharge roughly doubles for every 10°C rise above 25°C, so a cabinet running at 45°C will drain this cell four times faster than the datasheet baseline. Check the panel's internal ambient with a probe thermometer during peak operating hours. If the reading exceeds 35°C, add a cabinet cooler or relocate the PLC away from heat-generating drives — that single change will extend cell life back toward the rated interval.
