One full discharge-to-shutdown followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% forces the IC to rewrite its reference curve against the new cell.

This is a voltage cliff symptom, not a capacity problem. When the modem transmits or the screen backlight peaks, current draw spikes sharply — and an aged or uncalibrated cell cannot hold its voltage above the 3.2V cutoff threshold under that load. The Dopod 828 won't turn on at all after the replacement battery sat in a drawer for months — how do I recover it?
Extended storage can push the cell below 2.5V per cell, which triggers BMS lockout to prevent damage. The BMS will refuse to pass current until the cell voltage is nudged above the recovery threshold. Connect the phone to a wall charger — not a USB port — and leave it for 30 to 60 minutes without attempting to power it on. Once the cell climbs above approximately 3.0V, the BMS releases lockout and the phone will boot normally.
The battery percentage on my Dopod 828 is jumping around erratically — 60%, then 45%, then 55% — right after the swap.
That erratic behaviour is the fuel gauge IC recalibrating in real time against a cell it has no history for. The coulomb counter is using the old cell's internal resistance model, which no longer matches the new cell, so percentage estimates swing as load and temperature shift. Do not top up or interrupt the charge — run one complete discharge to automatic shutdown, then charge to 100% in a single session. After that cycle the IC locks onto the new cell's curve and percentage readings stabilise.
