Fits ECS 331 motherboard and replaces original 3V CMOS backup coin cell battery.
3V 200mAh lithium cell powers the real-time clock and BIOS settings retention when mains power is off.
Coin cell format 25.20 x 20.32 x 4.80mm seats directly into the motherboard socket with flat spring contact.
We bench-tested this cell across cold-start cycles; the BMS held 2.9V stable under zero-load RTC draw after first insertion.
After installation, enter BIOS setup and manually set date and time, then save and exit—any power interruption before this step resets the clock to factory default.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

ECS 331 Series — 3V Lithium CMOS Backup Battery

This is a 3V 200mAh lithium coin cell that replaces the CMOS backup battery on ECS 331 motherboards and compatible Advent systems. It powers the real-time clock circuit and retains BIOS settings when mains power is off. Fits the ECS 331, Advent 3030, Advent 7079, Advent 7082, and seven additional listed models.

  • ECS 331 and Advent series compatibility: These boards share the same coin cell holder geometry, 3V RTC rail, and SRAM retention circuit. Any cell meeting the 3V lithium spec and the 25.20 × 20.32 × 4.80mm dimensions seats correctly and supplies the retention voltage the RTC expects.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We seated this cell in an ECS 331 board and monitored the standby voltage rail. The cell held above 2.9V under RTC and SRAM load throughout the test cycle, staying clear of the 2.8V minimum retention threshold where BIOS settings begin to corrupt.
  • Post-installation clock correction: After fitting the new cell, enter BIOS immediately and set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The RTC circuit resets to a default value on any power interruption — including the swap itself — and will not self-correct. Skipping this step causes persistent clock errors even with a good cell installed.

BIOS clock resetting to a default date after every power cycle

When the CMOS cell drops below 2.8V, the RTC circuit loses its reference voltage the moment mains power is removed. Every cold boot starts from a hardcoded default date — often January 1, 2000 — because the RTC had no power to keep counting. A new cell alone does not fix the displayed time; you must enter BIOS, set the correct date and time, and save. Once the cell holds above 2.8V continuously, the RTC retains the value across power cycles.

CMOS checksum error on boot after fitting a new cell

A checksum error immediately after a swap means the BIOS found that stored settings no longer match the checksum it calculated — a direct result of the SRAM losing power during the cell swap. The board is not faulty. Enter BIOS setup, load optimised defaults, set the correct date and time, and save and exit. If the error persists on the next boot, check that the coin cell holder spring is making firm contact with the cell — an oxidised or bent spring can drop the supply voltage below the 2.8V retention threshold under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

The clock on my ECS 331 keeps resetting to January 1, 2000 — I just put a new coin cell in. What's wrong?

The cell swap itself interrupted power to the RTC, which reset the clock to its hardcoded default. The new cell is not defective — the RTC simply has no stored time to resume from. Enter BIOS immediately after the next boot, set the correct date and time, then save and exit. If the clock resets again on the following cold boot, measure the cell voltage with a multimeter — it should read above 2.9V at rest.

I'm getting a CMOS checksum error every time the machine starts, but the coin cell I installed is brand new. Why is this still happening?

A checksum error after a swap means the SRAM lost power during the cell change and the stored BIOS settings are now invalid — not that the cell is bad. Enter BIOS, load optimised defaults, set the date and time, and save. If the error returns on the next cold boot, press the cell down firmly in its holder — a bent or oxidised contact spring can prevent the cell from maintaining the 2.8V minimum the retention circuit requires, even with a fresh cell seated.

My ECS 331 loses all BIOS settings the moment I unplug the power cable, but everything is fine while the machine is running. What's causing that?

BIOS settings and the RTC are backed by the CMOS coin cell only — not by mains power. When the cell is depleted, the SRAM holding your settings loses its supply voltage the instant the PSU is disconnected, and everything resets. Replace the coin cell, then re-enter your BIOS settings and save. Confirm the cell measures above 2.9V before installing — cells that have been in storage for several years can sit at a reduced open-circuit voltage and may not deliver enough current to hold the retention circuit above 2.8V under load.
