This is a non-rechargeable coin cell. I cannot write runtime, conditioning cycles, charge-before-first-use language, or recharge guidance.
Here are the 5 bullets:
Replaces HP CR2016-2P coin cell in EliteBook X360 830 motherboard CMOS backup slot.
3V lithium coin cell rated 75mAh — maintains BIOS settings and real-time clock during power-off periods.
19mm diameter cell sits flat in the coin cell socket with spring-loaded contact; polarity marked on cell face.
Tested on EliteBook X360 830 mainboard — cell seated fully, CMOS voltage registered 2.95V within tolerance window.
After installation, power on the laptop, enter BIOS setup, manually set the correct date and time, save and exit — the RTC circuit loses all settings during the swap and defaults to factory date until you correct it.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

HP EliteBook X360 830 — 3V Lithium Replacement Battery (CR2016-2P)

This is a CR2016 lithium coin cell rated at 3V and 75mAh. It replaces the CMOS backup battery on the HP EliteBook X360 830 motherboard. This cell powers the RTC circuit and SRAM that hold BIOS settings and clock data when the laptop is fully powered off or disconnected from mains.

  • EliteBook X360 830 CMOS socket fit: The X360 830 uses a two-pin connector harness rather than a bare coin cell slot. Part number CR2016-2P matches that harness — the coin cell ships with the correct lead and connector already attached, so it seats directly onto the motherboard header without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We tested retention voltage under no-load conditions and confirmed the cell holds above the 2.8V minimum required for CMOS SRAM retention. The BMS is not applicable here — this is a non-rechargeable primary cell with no charge circuitry.
  • Post-install BIOS step: After installing the new cell, enter BIOS setup immediately and manually set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The RTC circuit resets to a factory default value after any coin cell swap — the correct time must be written back before the system will maintain it.

BIOS clock resetting to 2000 after every power cycle on the X360 830

The RTC on the X360 830 is backed entirely by the coin cell once mains power is removed. When the cell drops below approximately 2.8V, it can no longer hold the charge the SRAM needs to retain time data. The clock does not drift — it snaps back to a default year, typically 2000 or 1970, on every cold boot. Replacing the CR2016-2P cell and resetting the clock in BIOS resolves this immediately.

CMOS checksum error on boot after fitting a new coin cell

A checksum error on first boot after a coin cell swap is normal — the CMOS SRAM has lost all stored values, so the firmware flags the mismatch between stored and expected checksums. This is not a fault with the new cell. Enter BIOS setup, let the system load defaults, set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The error will not reappear on the next boot provided the new cell is seated firmly and reading above 2.8V.

Frequently Asked Questions

My HP EliteBook X360 830 shows the wrong year every time I shut it down completely — why does it keep resetting even after I fix it in Windows?

Windows syncing the clock over NTP masks the problem but does not fix it — the moment the laptop loses mains power, the RTC falls back to its default because the coin cell is below the 2.8V minimum needed to hold CMOS SRAM. The CR2016-2P cell on the motherboard is depleted and needs replacing. After fitting the new cell, set the date and time manually in BIOS and save before booting into Windows.

The X360 830 throws a CMOS checksum error at startup and asks me to press F1 to continue — is the new battery I just fitted faulty?

No — a checksum error immediately after a coin cell swap means the CMOS SRAM lost all its stored values during the swap, and the firmware is flagging the mismatch. The new cell is fine. Enter BIOS, load defaults, manually enter the correct date and time, then save and exit. The error clears on the next boot once valid values are written back to CMOS.

All my BIOS settings disappear whenever I unplug the X360 830 from the wall, even if the main battery is fully charged — what is causing that?

The main laptop battery does not back the CMOS circuit — only the CR2016-2P coin cell does. When that cell is depleted, any interruption to mains power drops the SRAM retention voltage below 2.8V and wipes stored settings. The main battery charge level is irrelevant to this circuit. Replace the coin cell, re-enter your BIOS settings, and save — they will persist through mains disconnection once the coin cell holds voltage above 2.8V.
