This is a 15.2V, 3800mAh (57.76Wh) Li-ion battery for the HP Omen 15-5000 series gaming laptop. It fits the Omen 15-5000NW, 5002TX, 5003TX, 5006TX, and over 217 additional configurations sharing the same RR04XL cell platform. OEM part numbers include 778978-005, HSTNN-LB6N, and TPN-W111.

  • Omen 15-5000 series platform fit: These models share the same four-cell Li-ion architecture, 15.2V nominal rail, and BMS handshake protocol. The connector pinout and EEPROM negotiation are identical across the listed configurations, so one cell covers the full range without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on an Omen 15 chassis. The BMS negotiated correctly, charge termination triggered at the expected voltage ceiling, and the protection circuit responded to simulated overcurrent without fault codes.
  • Post-install calibration for Omen 15: After fitting, run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. This resets the BIOS battery learn cycle and clears the inaccurate health warning that appears after every cell swap on this platform.

BIOS reporting poor battery health immediately after fitting a new cell

The Omen 15 BIOS reads health data from the battery's EEPROM, which stores cycle count and wear metrics from the previous cell. When a new battery arrives, its EEPROM reflects factory defaults that the BIOS hasn't calibrated against yet, triggering a false poor-health flag. This is a firmware state, not a defective cell. Running the HP Battery Check utility after one full learn cycle — discharge to hibernate, uninterrupted charge to 100% — allows the BIOS to rewrite its reference data. After that cycle, the health status clears on virtually every Omen 15-5000 unit we've tested.

Laptop shuts down at 20–30% charge shown on Omen 15

This happens when the fuel gauge IC's learned discharge curve doesn't match the new cell's actual voltage profile. The OS reads 25% remaining, but the cell voltage has already dropped below the threshold the BMS will sustain under full CPU and display load. The result is an abrupt shutdown rather than a graceful hibernate. Fix it by completing two full calibration cycles — hibernate-cutoff discharge followed by an uninterrupted charge to 100% each time. After the second cycle, the fuel gauge recalibrates its curve and the shutdown-at-percentage behaviour stops.

Why does Windows show my new Omen 15 battery as 0% or "unknown" right after fitting it?

The fuel gauge IC on the Omen 15 motherboard hasn't built a discharge curve for the new cell yet, so it reports an unknown or zero state until it completes a reference cycle. This is an EEPROM and fuel gauge initialisation issue — not a dead battery. Run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. After that single cycle, the gauge locks onto the cell's actual profile and reads correctly.

My replacement RR04XL stops charging at exactly 80% and won't go higher — is the cell faulty?

Almost certainly not. The Omen 15 BIOS includes a battery charge limit setting that caps charge at 80% by default on some firmware versions — it's a BIOS-controlled threshold, not a battery fault. Open HP Support Assistant or navigate to BIOS settings under Battery Care Function and check whether the charge limit is enabled. Disable it or set it to 100%, and the cell will charge to its full 57.76Wh capacity.

System information shows the wrong Wh rating for the new battery — it says something different from 57.76Wh. What's going on?

The Wh figure Windows reports is pulled from the EEPROM data embedded in the battery's protection circuit, which reflects the rated chemistry specification. Until the BIOS completes a learn cycle against the actual cell, it may display a cached or default Wh value from the old battery's stored data. Run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff then a complete uninterrupted charge, and the system will update its Wh reference to match the installed cell.
