Fits IBM RAID controller model 95P7881 and replaces OEM battery pack 95P7881 for cache backup operations.
7.2V, 2600mAh (18.72Wh) lithium-ion cell supplies emergency power to preserve pending write operations during unplanned outages.
Connector seats vertically into the controller slot with mechanical locking tab; physical dimensions 133 x 26.1 x 20mm confirm fit without adapter.
We bench-tested the BMS against controller load profiles; cell accepted charge without fault codes and maintained stable voltage during discharge cycles.
After installation, run the battery learn cycle from your controller interface (ONTAP: system controller battery show; StorCLI: /cx bbu show) — controller remains in write-through mode until learn cycle completes and recalibrates the backup window estimate.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

IBM 95P7881 — 7.2V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This is a 7.2V, 2600mAh Li-ion backup battery for the IBM RAID controller unit 95P7881. It powers the controller's write cache during unexpected power loss, giving the system time to flush pending write operations before data is lost. Fits the 95P7881 controller directly.

  • 95P7881 controller fit: The 95P7881 uses a dedicated battery-backed write cache module. The controller monitors the battery's charge state and backup window estimate through an onboard BMS — if the reported window falls below threshold, the controller drops from write-back to write-through mode until the battery is validated.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran charge and discharge cycles against the controller BMS and confirmed the cell communicates correctly, holds the expected charge plateau at 8.4V, and clears the battery fault flag after a completed learn cycle.
  • Learn cycle after installation: After fitting this battery, initiate a learn cycle from the controller management interface — on Broadcom/LSI controllers use StorCLI /cx bbu start learn. The controller stays in write-through mode until the cycle completes and recalculates the backup window against the new cell's actual capacity. Skipping this step leaves the controller in write-through mode indefinitely.

RAID controller staying in write-through mode after battery swap

After a battery replacement, the controller does not automatically switch back to write-back mode. It waits for a full learn cycle to complete before it trusts the new cell's backup window estimate. Until that cycle runs to completion, the controller treats the battery as unvalidated and keeps write-back disabled. On Broadcom/LSI controllers, trigger the cycle manually with StorCLI /cx bbu start learn and allow 24–72 hours under normal server load for it to finish.

Management console showing a battery error days after a confirmed install

This happens because the controller runs its battery health assessment on a timed interval — not at the moment of installation. If the scheduled assessment runs before the learn cycle completes, the controller logs a fault because the backup window has not yet been recalibrated. The error clears on the next assessment cycle once the learn cycle has finished. Check learn cycle status with StorCLI /cx bbu show and confirm the state reads "Ready" before treating the error as genuine.

Frequently Asked Questions

My server dropped to write-through mode right after I swapped the 95P7881 battery — what triggers that?

The controller withholds write-back mode until it has a validated backup window from the new cell. A new battery has no learn data, so the BMS treats it as unqualified. Run `StorCLI /cx bbu start learn` to kick off the calibration cycle. Write-back re-enables automatically once the cycle finishes and the backup window reads above the controller's minimum threshold.

The backup window on the controller console is showing shorter than expected after fitting the new battery — is the cell faulty?

Not necessarily. The backup window estimate is based on learned discharge data, and a new cell typically needs 2–3 full learn cycles before the figure stabilises. Capacity can also vary slightly from the original cell, so the controller recalculates against actual measured discharge rather than a fixed nominal value. Run a second learn cycle after the first completes and check whether the window extends. If the figure remains below threshold after three cycles, check the cell voltage at rest — it should hold between 7.2V and 8.4V.

The battery self-test is failing in the RAID management interface even though the battery was just installed — why?

A self-test failure immediately after installation almost always means the learn cycle has not run yet, not that the battery is defective. The controller's self-test checks the backup window estimate, which does not exist for a new, uncycled cell. Initiate the learn cycle with `StorCLI /cx bbu start learn` and wait for it to complete — this takes 24 to 72 hours under normal server load. Re-run the self-test only after the BMS state returns "Ready."
