Fits IBM AS400, AS400 i5, AS2740, iSeries RAID controller cards replacing OEM part 44L0313, 42R5070, 3HR-AAC, 22R2717, 2763, 2778, 2782, 5703, 5709, or 5729.
3.6V, 2000mAh Ni-MH cell maintains write-back cache on the RAID controller during power loss without data corruption.
Standard cylindrical connector clips into the vertical battery slot on the controller card with a positive-end-down orientation and locking tab.
We bench-tested this cell on a simulator load bank at 0.2C discharge; the BMS registered full capacity and held float charge steady across thermal cycling.
After installation, run the battery learn cycle from your controller management interface—on ONTAP systems use "system controller battery show," on Broadcom platforms use StorCLI—because the controller stays in write-through mode until the cycle completes and recalibrates the backup window estimate against the new cell's actual capacity.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

IBM AS400 RAID Controller — 3.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (44L0313)

This 3.6V, 2000mAh Ni-MH battery backs the write cache on IBM AS400 and iSeries RAID controller cards. It holds the controller's cache memory during a power loss or system shutdown, preventing data corruption on in-flight writes. Compatible with AS400, AS400 i5, AS2740, and iSeries controllers using OEM part numbers 44L0313, 42R5070, 22R2717, and related variants.

  • AS400 and iSeries RAID controller fitment: These controllers share the same 3.6V NiMH cell format, connector pinout, and BMS handshake across the AS400, AS400 i5, AS2740, and iSeries lines. IBM standardised this cell across multiple card revisions, which is why the OEM cross-reference list spans part numbers 2763, 2778, 2782, 5703, 5709, and 5729.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge-discharge cycles and monitored the BMS handshake. The controller detected the new cell, initiated a learn cycle, and transitioned from write-through to write-back mode once the backup window was recalibrated against the new capacity.
  • Post-swap learn cycle initiation: After installing this battery, kick off a manual learn cycle from the controller management interface — on iSeries use the Hardware Management Console battery conditioning function. The controller cannot accurately estimate its backup window until it completes at least one full learn cycle on the new cell, and it will hold in write-through mode until that recalibration finishes.

RAID controller staying in write-through mode after battery swap

After a battery replacement, the AS400 RAID controller defaults to write-through mode as a safety measure — it does not automatically trust the new cell's backup window. The controller must complete a full learn cycle before it will re-enable write-back caching. This cycle discharges and recharges the cell under normal operating load, measuring actual capacity rather than relying on a nominal value. Depending on system load, this takes 24 to 72 hours; the controller switches to write-back mode automatically once the cycle reports a sufficient backup window.

Management console reporting a battery fault days after installation

The AS400 controller runs its battery self-assessment on a timed interval — not at boot and not immediately after a swap. If the scheduled assessment fires before the learn cycle has completed, the controller logs a battery fault because the backup window estimate is still undefined or below threshold. This is expected behaviour, not a cell defect. Allow the learn cycle to complete fully, then check the battery status again via the Hardware Management Console; the fault clears once the controller has a valid backup window reading above its minimum threshold — typically 25 seconds at 3.3V load.

Frequently Asked Questions

The controller switched back to write-back mode but flipped to write-through again overnight — what causes that?

A single learn cycle does not permanently lock in the backup window estimate on these controllers. The AS400 RAID card runs periodic re-assessments, and if the cell's measured capacity drops below the controller's minimum backup window threshold during a re-test, it drops back to write-through mode as a precaution. Ni-MH cells also show a slight capacity dip in the first two to three cycles before stabilising at their rated output. Run two to three full learn cycles under normal system load and the controller's write-back mode will hold once the cell's capacity reading is consistent.

Battery self-test is failing in the Hardware Management Console even though the battery is brand new — is the cell faulty?

Not likely. The self-test measures the actual backup window by discharging the cell at a fixed load and timing how long it holds voltage above the minimum threshold. A new Ni-MH cell often underperforms on the first test because it has not yet been conditioned — capacity builds over the first few charge-discharge cycles. Let the system run the learn cycle to completion without interruption; if the self-test still fails after three full cycles, check the cell voltage at rest — it should read between 3.6V and 4.0V. A reading below 3.3V at rest after full charge indicates a cell issue.

The backup window shown in the management console is shorter than what the original battery reported — should it match exactly?

The backup window estimate recalibrates against the actual cell being tested, and a new Ni-MH cell's measured output will differ slightly from the original aged cell's logged baseline. The console figure will also change between learn cycles as the cell conditions. After two to three full learn cycles, the reported window stabilises at the cell's true capacity. As long as the reported backup window exceeds the controller's minimum threshold — check your controller's event log for the specific value, typically 25 seconds — the system will operate normally in write-back mode.
