Fits Intermec PB50, PB51, PW50, PW50-18 portable printers; replaces OEM part numbers AB13, 318-026-001, 318-027-001, 318-026-003, 55-0038-000, 318-026-004.
14.4V lithium-ion at 3400mAh delivers stable voltage to the thermal print head and paper feed motor throughout a full shift.
Battery slides into the rear slot with a spring-loaded latch; connector is keyed — align the tab before inserting fully.
We bench tested this cell in a PB50 running continuous label cycles; BMS held voltage steady at 13.8V under motor load.
After installation, charge fully and print five test receipts before field deployment — the thermal head calibrates its temperature profile on first prints.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Intermec PB50 / PB51 / PW50 Series — 14.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (AB13)

This 14.4V, 3400mAh lithium-ion battery replaces the OEM pack in the Intermec PB50, PB51, PW50, and PW50-18 mobile thermal printers. These are handheld label and receipt printers used in logistics, retail, and field operations where a mains connection is not available. Cross-references AB13, 318-026-001, 318-027-001, 318-026-003, 318-026-004, and 55-0038-000.

  • PB50 / PB51 / PW50 platform compatibility: All four models in this series share the same 14.4V battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol — the same cell pack services the entire line without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the PB50's BMS initialisation sequence and confirmed the protection circuit responds correctly to the printer's motor-start current draw at the paper feed and thermal head. No false low-voltage cutoffs were triggered during print cycles.
  • First-deploy print sequence: After fitting the battery, charge to full, then run five consecutive print jobs before deploying in the field. The PB50's BMS calibrates its current profile against the thermal head and feed motor load during these initial cycles — skipping this step can result in premature low-battery warnings under normal use.

Why the PB50 refuses to print after sitting unused for weeks

Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage. If the PB50 has been sitting idle, the pack voltage can drop below the printer's minimum motor drive threshold — typically around 12V under load — and the BMS locks out output to protect the cells. The printer may power on and show a charge indicator, but the feed motor and thermal head will not fire. Place the battery on charge for a full cycle before attempting a print job; the BMS will release the lockout once cell voltage recovers above the cutoff threshold.

Faded or patchy print output that gets worse toward end of charge

The PB50's thermal print head requires a stable voltage to maintain consistent head temperature across the print line. As battery charge drops, voltage sag under load causes the head to run cooler than the target temperature, producing faded or uneven output — often most visible at the edges of labels. This is not a head fault; it is a voltage delivery problem. If print quality degrades progressively through a shift, check battery state first and recharge before the pack drops below 13V under load.

Frequently Asked Questions

My PB50 powers on fine but won't start a print job — the feed motor just clicks and stops. What's wrong?

The feed motor requires a higher current surge to start than the printer draws at idle, and if the battery voltage sags below the motor-start threshold under that load, the BMS cuts output before the paper moves. This often happens with an aged or deeply discharged pack that reads "charged" at rest but collapses under load. Fit the replacement battery, charge fully, and check that the printer initiates a full print cycle on the first job. If the motor runs cleanly on the new pack, the original cell was the cause.

The PB50 keeps dropping its Bluetooth connection mid-print job — could the battery be causing this?

Yes. The Bluetooth radio in the PB50 draws additional current simultaneously with the thermal head and feed motor during a print cycle. When battery voltage sags under that combined load, the radio loses enough power to drop the connection before the job completes. The printer may reconnect immediately, making it look like an app or pairing issue. Charge the battery to full and run a test print job — if the connection holds consistently on a full charge but drops as the pack depletes, replace the battery and recheck at 13.5V or above during the print cycle.

Paper is feeding unevenly and jamming inside the PB50 — could a weak battery cause this?

The feed motor torque is directly tied to supply voltage. A battery that can no longer maintain voltage under load reduces the force the motor applies to the paper, causing it to slip, skew, or stall mid-feed — which registers as a jam even when the paper path is clear. Before cleaning the rollers or adjusting the paper guide, fit a fully charged battery and run five test feeds. If the jam clears on a strong charge, the issue is motor torque from low voltage, not a mechanical fault.
