Fits JVC CU-VH1 and GR-series camcorders; replaces BN-V428, BN-V428U, BN-V438, BN-V438U.
7.4V at 3300mAh supplies full power for recording, playback, and autofocus across the CU-VH1 line.
Flat connector mates directly to camcorder contact plate; polarity-keyed to prevent reverse insertion.
Bench testing shows BMS accepts charge via camera body without authentication errors; voltage curve matches discharge profile.
On first install, charge fully in the camera body before extended recording—JVC CU-series firmware needs one power cycle to map battery-remaining display correctly to this cell's discharge curve.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

JVC CU-VH1 / GR Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BN-V428)

This is a 7.4V, 3300mAh Li-ion battery for JVC camcorders including the CU-VH1, CU-VH1US, GR-33, GR-4000US, and over 250 compatible models. It replaces OEM part numbers BN-V428, BN-V428U, BN-V438, and BN-V438U. The physical dimensions are 54.95 x 55.34 x 37.58mm — check these against your current battery before ordering.

  • CU-VH1 and GR series compatibility: These JVC camcorder lines share a common 7.4V battery architecture and the same physical connector footprint. The BMS handshake uses the same three-pin communication line across this entire family, so one cell fits the full range without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through full charge and discharge cycles on a CU-VH1 body. The BMS accepted the cell cleanly, voltage held steady through recording and playback loads, and protection circuits triggered correctly at the low-voltage cutoff threshold.
  • First charge on the CU-VH1: Charge this battery inside the camera body or OEM charger before your first recording session. Some JVC BMS firmware maps the battery-remaining indicator to a discharge curve it builds on the first full cycle — skipping this step can cause the indicator to read inaccurately from the start.

Why the CU-VH1 displays a dead battery icon on a partially charged replacement cell

JVC's battery gauge maps the remaining-charge display to a voltage curve it calibrated for the original OEM cell. A new aftermarket cell has a slightly different discharge curve, so the camera can misread the state of charge at the top and bottom of the range. The indicator may jump straight to low battery from what looks like a full charge. One full charge-discharge cycle run inside the camera body lets the BMS recalibrate its threshold mapping to the new cell's actual curve.

Battery percentage jumping erratically during recording on the CU-VH1

This happens when the camera's voltage-threshold indicator is reading a cell discharge curve it doesn't recognise. The BMS samples voltage at fixed intervals and maps those readings to percentage steps — if the new cell's voltage sag under load sits between two threshold points the firmware expects, the percentage display skips or bounces. Run the battery from 100% to full discharge once in the camera to let the BMS anchor its threshold map. After one full cycle, readings typically stabilise. If jumping persists past two cycles, check that the cell is resting at or above 7.2V fully charged.

Frequently Asked Questions

My CU-VH1 shows "no battery" or won't recognise the new BN-V428 replacement — what's happening?

JVC camcorders run an authentication check on first install, and a new cell that hasn't been through a charge cycle in the OEM charger or camera body can fail that check. Remove the battery, reinsert it, then charge it fully inside the camera before attempting to power on for recording. Most CU-VH1 bodies accept the cell cleanly after one complete charge cycle. If the body still rejects it, confirm the three-pin connector is fully seated — partial contact on that communication pin triggers the same "no battery" flag.

The shot count on my CU-VH1 is lower than I expected from a 3300mAh cell — is something wrong with the battery?

Nothing is wrong. The rated capacity is measured under a steady, controlled discharge load — not under camcorder conditions. On the CU-VH1, the optical image stabiliser, LCD backlight, autofocus motor, and continuous recording all draw current simultaneously, and that combined load depletes the cell significantly faster than the bench figure suggests. Cold temperatures above 0°C also reduce usable capacity as lithium-ion cell impedance rises in the cold. The 3300mAh figure is accurate; the real-world shot count simply reflects the total draw of everything running at once.

The flash on my JVC camcorder takes noticeably longer to recycle between shots near the end of a charge — is this the battery failing?

This is expected cell behaviour, not a fault. Flash recycling draws a burst of current to recharge the capacitor, and that current demand causes a voltage sag that gets more pronounced as the cell approaches its lower state of charge. As capacity drops below roughly 20%, the cell's internal impedance rises and it can no longer deliver capacitor-recharge current as quickly. The fix is to recharge before the cell drops into that range — keep the battery above 3.6V per cell (7.2V total) for consistent flash recycling between shots.
