Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

KAPOK Compaq Presario 7200 Series — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (DR36)

This is a 12V, 3800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Compaq Presario 7200 series laptop. It also fits the 6200M, 6100, and 7800 series notebooks. OEM part numbers DR36 and DR36S are both covered by this cell.

  • Presario 6100, 6200M, 7200, and 7800 compatibility: These models share the same 12V power rail, battery bay connector, and BMS handshake protocol — one cell fits the full range without any adapter or wiring change.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through full charge and discharge on a Presario 7200 unit. The BMS accepted the new cell without fault codes, and the charge controller completed a full charge cycle without interruption.
  • First-cycle calibration on Ni-MH cells: After installing, run one full discharge to hibernate-cutoff, then charge uninterrupted to 100%. Ni-MH cells need this cycle to reset the BIOS battery learn routine — skipping it leaves an inaccurate health warning in the OS that persists across reboots.

BIOS reporting battery health as poor after replacing the DR36 cell

The BIOS stores battery health data in EEPROM from the previous cell. When a new cell goes in, that stored data does not clear automatically — the BIOS compares the new cell's output against old reference values and flags a mismatch as poor health. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Running one complete discharge-to-hibernate then a full uninterrupted charge triggers the battery learn cycle and rewrites the EEPROM reference data. After that cycle completes, the health status updates to reflect the actual condition of the new cell.

Fuel gauge jumping between readings and showing wildly wrong percentages

The fuel gauge IC in these Presario models estimates charge state by tracking voltage curves it learned from the old cell. A fresh Ni-MH cell has a different internal resistance and voltage slope, so the IC miscalculates and displays erratic percentages for the first few cycles. This is a calibration gap, not a hardware fault. Run two or three full discharge-to-hibernate and full-charge cycles without interruption. By the third cycle the IC has enough data to track the new cell accurately, and the gauge stabilises to within a few percent.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Presario 7200 shuts down suddenly when the gauge still shows 25% — is the new battery faulty?

This is a voltage cliff issue, not a dead cell. Under combined CPU and display load, Ni-MH cells drop voltage sharply at around 20–30% remaining — faster than the fuel gauge IC can track. The BIOS interprets that voltage drop as a critical cutoff and shuts the machine down before the gauge catches up. Run one full discharge cycle to hibernate-cutoff, let the machine power off on its own without forcing shutdown. That calibration cycle teaches the fuel gauge IC where the actual voltage cliff sits on this specific cell, and the premature shutdowns stop.

The OS shows the battery Wh rating as different from the 45.6Wh listed on the cell — should I be concerned?

No. The Wh figure the OS displays is pulled from EEPROM data written by the original DR36 cell — it reflects the old cell's rated chemistry, not the replacement. The actual energy capacity of the new cell is 45.6Wh as rated. Once the BIOS battery learn cycle runs after a full discharge-to-100% charge, the EEPROM reference updates and the OS figure corrects itself to match the new cell.

The laptop charges the new DR36 cell to 80% then stops — the charge indicator goes solid and never reaches 100%.

Some Presario BIOS versions include a charge limit setting that caps charging at 80% to reduce cell wear — this is a firmware behaviour, not a battery fault. Check the Power Management section of the BIOS setup menu and look for a battery charge threshold or conservation mode option. Disable it, save, and reboot. If no such option appears, reset BIOS settings to default, which clears any charge limit that may have been activated by a previous power event.
