Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Kenwood TK-3200L-U15P Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (KNB-45L)
This is a 7.4V, 2000mAh Li-ion replacement battery for the Kenwood TK-3200L-U15P and related UHF portable transceivers. It replaces OEM part numbers KNB-45, KNB-45L, and KNB-45Li. Fits the TK-3202L-U16P, TK-3200-U2P, TK-3200-U8P, and over 50 additional TK-3200 series variants.
- TK-3200 platform fit: The TK-3200 series shares a common battery bay geometry, contact pin layout, and BMS handshake protocol across UHF variants. One pack covers the full production run without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through a full charge cycle in a KSC-35 dock and verified BMS handshake, cell balancing, and thermal cutoff behaviour under simulated transmit-load current draw. No anomalies flagged.
- First insertion into the dock: If the charger LED shows a fault blink on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The KSC-series dock requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new BMS handshake before charging begins.
Why the TK-3200 cuts out mid-transmission on a new KNB-45 pack
New Li-ion cells ship at storage voltage — typically 3.6–3.7V per cell, not full charge. When PTT is pressed, the transmitter pulls a sharp current spike of 1.5–2A. If the pack hasn't been through at least one full charge cycle, that spike can drag cell voltage below the BMS overcurrent threshold and trip an automatic shutoff. Charge the pack fully before first use in the field. After a complete charge cycle, the BMS headroom handles normal transmit spikes without interruption.
Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after fitting the KNB-45L
The TK-3200 uses a voltage-threshold bar indicator — it reads pack voltage directly and maps it to bar segments. A new cell at storage voltage sits below the threshold for a full-charge display, so the radio correctly shows fewer bars even though the pack isn't faulty. Charge to full in the KSC dock until the LED goes solid green, then reinsert the pack. The bar display will reflect actual charge state at 8.2–8.4V resting voltage.

Frequently Asked Questions
The TK-3200 drops to low TX power mid-shift — is that the battery or the radio?
That's voltage sag under sustained RF output, not a radio fault. As the pack discharges, cell voltage drops under transmit load, and the TK-3200 automatically reduces TX power to stay within its operating voltage floor. Swap to a fully charged KNB-45L pack and the full power output returns. If the same symptom appears with a freshly charged pack, check the gold contact strip for corrosion — poor contact resistance amplifies voltage sag under load.
My KSC dock blinks a fault LED and never starts charging the new pack — what clears it?
A fault blink on first insertion almost always means the dock can't complete the BMS handshake because the contact strip isn't making clean electrical contact. Remove the KNB-45L, wipe all five gold contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reseat the pack with firm downward pressure until the latch clicks. If the fault LED persists after two clean reseats, measure pack voltage at the contacts with a multimeter — a reading below 6.0V means the cell dropped below the dock's acceptance threshold during storage, and the pack will need a trickle pre-charge before the dock takes over.
The radio powers on fine but cuts out the moment I press PTT — new battery, first day of use.
This is a BMS overcurrent trip caused by transmitting on a pack that hasn't completed its first full charge cycle. Storage-voltage cells sit at roughly 7.2–7.4V, and the transmit current spike drives cell voltage below the BMS protection threshold, triggering an automatic shutoff. Place the pack in the KSC dock and charge until the LED goes solid green — that brings resting voltage to 8.2–8.4V and gives the BMS enough headroom to handle the PTT surge. The cutout will not recur after a full charge.
