Fits Lenovo ThinkPad X40, X41, and X41 Tablet models using OEM part number 92P1004 or 23.2004.181.
3V lithium coin cell with 200mAh capacity maintains BIOS settings, system clock, and SRAM data when main power is disconnected.
CR2032 form factor seats directly into the motherboard coin cell socket with spring contact; no soldering or adapters required.
We bench tested this cell across X40 and X41 boards — CMOS checksum errors cleared after installation, RTC circuit accepted the cell at nominal voltage.
After installation, enter BIOS setup and reset the date and time manually, then save and exit — the RTC circuit will reset to a default year if power is interrupted before the new cell stabilizes at full retention voltage.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Lenovo ThinkPad X40 / X41 Series — 3V Lithium CMOS Backup Battery (92P1004)

This is a 3V, 200mAh lithium coin cell that replaces the CMOS backup battery in the Lenovo ThinkPad X40, X41, and X41 Tablet series. It powers the RTC circuit and SRAM when the laptop is off or unplugged, keeping BIOS settings, system time, and hardware configuration intact. Without a functional cell, those settings reset to factory defaults every time mains power is removed.

  • ThinkPad X40 / X41 platform fit: The X40, X41, and X41 Tablet models (including 1866 and 1867 variants) share the same CMOS socket, connector footprint, and retention voltage threshold. One replacement cell covers the full group.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We confirmed open-circuit voltage at 3.0V and verified the BMS handoff — the RTC circuit latched correctly and held settings through a full mains disconnect cycle without resetting.
  • Post-install clock correction: After fitting the new cell, enter BIOS immediately and set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The RTC circuit resets to a default value after any power interruption, and that default date persists into the OS until manually corrected in firmware.

BIOS clock resetting to 2000 after every power cycle

The ThinkPad X40 RTC circuit requires a minimum retention voltage of 2.8V from the CMOS cell to hold the clock register between power cycles. A depleted cell drops below that threshold the moment mains power is removed, and the RTC resets to its default epoch — typically January 1, 2000. The symptom appears on boot as a wrong system date, sometimes accompanied by a low-battery or date/time warning prompt. Replacing the coin cell and setting the correct time in BIOS resolves it immediately.

CMOS checksum error on boot after fitting a new cell

A checksum error after installing a new coin cell usually means the CMOS SRAM was completely cleared before the swap — the stored checksum no longer matches the default values. This is not a fault with the replacement cell. Enter BIOS setup, load default settings, set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The checksum recalculates on the next boot and the error clears.

Frequently Asked Questions

My ThinkPad X41 shows the wrong date every morning even though I set it the night before — what's causing that?

The CMOS cell has dropped below the 2.8V minimum retention voltage the RTC circuit needs to hold the clock register overnight. Once the laptop is unplugged, there's nothing powering the clock, so it resets to a default date by morning. Replace the 92P1004 coin cell, then enter BIOS, set the correct date and time, save, and exit.

I just installed a new coin cell but my ThinkPad X40 still shows a CMOS checksum error on boot — did I get a bad battery?

The cell is almost certainly fine. A checksum error after a swap means the SRAM was fully cleared before the new cell went in — the stored checksum no longer matches anything. The fix is in BIOS: enter setup, load optimised defaults, set the correct date and time, then save and exit. The checksum recalculates on the next POST and the error clears.

The coin cell I pulled out of my X41 Tablet measures low voltage on a multimeter — could the motherboard socket have drained it prematurely?

A corroded or weakened contact spring in the CMOS socket can cause a poor connection that keeps the cell partially loaded even when it should be in standby, accelerating drain. Before fitting the replacement, inspect the socket spring — it should apply firm, even pressure to the cell face. Clean any oxidation with a dry cotton swab, seat the new cell firmly, and confirm open-circuit voltage reads at or above 3.0V immediately after installation.
