Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Lithonia LQC 1 G EL N — 2.4V Ni-Cd Replacement Battery (ELB 2P41P2N)
This is a 2.4V, 2000mAh Ni-Cd replacement battery for the Lithonia LQC 1 G EL N emergency lighting unit. It fits directly into the fixture housing and restores the backup power function that activates when mains power fails. Capacity is 4.8Wh, matching the original cell specification.
- LQC 1 G EL N fit: The LQC series uses a two-cell Ni-Cd pack at 2.4V with a specific footprint (44.50 × 24.80 × 22.70mm per cell). The charge controller in this fixture expects that voltage range on float — substituting a different chemistry or voltage causes the controller to flag a fault and refuse to complete the charge cycle.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through a full charge and timed load discharge on the bench. The BMS accepted the cell without fault indication, and the charge LED transitioned from red to green within the expected window after a full 24-hour charge.
- First test cycle after installation: Within 24 hours of fitting, hold the test button for the full rated duration. This confirms the new cell accepts load current and lets the charge controller register the new cell capacity before the fixture's next scheduled compliance test.
Emergency light failing its duration test after battery replacement
A freshly installed Ni-Cd cell rarely delivers its full rated capacity on the first discharge. Ni-Cd chemistry requires one or two full charge-discharge cycles before the cell reaches its rated 2000mAh. If the fixture is tested immediately after installation without a full 24-hour charge, the cell will exhaust early and the unit will fail its duration requirement. Allow a minimum 24-hour charge from a fully depleted state before running a compliance test.
Charge indicator staying red after confirmed good installation
A cell that has sat in storage will have a resting voltage below the float acceptance window the LQC charge controller expects. When the controller measures that low voltage on connection, it can flag a fault rather than begin charging. Leave the unit plugged into mains for at least 12 hours — the trickle current will bring the cell voltage up into the acceptance range and the LED should transition to green. If it does not clear after 24 hours, check the connector seating and confirm no cell polarity reversal during installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
The emergency light comes on during a test but starts dimming noticeably after a few minutes — is the new battery faulty?
Not necessarily faulty — a Ni-Cd cell that has not had a full conditioning cycle will sag under load before it reaches rated capacity. The cell needs one complete 24-hour charge followed by a full discharge test to form the cell chemistry properly. Run the test button cycle again after that conditioning period. If dimming still occurs early, measure cell voltage under load — it should hold above 2.0V through the rated duration.
The fitting still shows a fault LED even though the battery is correctly installed and the charge indicator went green — how do I clear it?
Some Lithonia LQC fittings latch a fault LED in firmware after a low-battery or open-circuit event and do not auto-clear when the fault condition resolves. Remove mains power from the fixture completely for 30 seconds, then restore it. This forces the charge controller to re-initialise and re-poll the cell. If the fault LED clears after power cycling, the unit is operating correctly and the latch was the only remaining issue.
After years of service the old battery looked swollen inside the fitting — what caused that and does it damage the charge circuit?
Swelling in Ni-Cd cells installed in emergency fittings is almost always caused by continuous trickle charge at elevated ambient temperature over several years. The charge controller in the LQC unit is not a smart charger — it applies a constant low current regardless of cell state, and heat accelerates overcharge damage to the cell casing. Before fitting the replacement, check that the fixture is not mounted directly above a heat source and that the housing vents are clear. A swollen cell that has leaked electrolyte may have contaminated the contact pins — clean them with isopropyl alcohol and inspect for corrosion before inserting the new cell.
