Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Memorex 16-837 / SM4200 / SM4300 / SM4400 — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This is a 12V 1800mAh (21.6Wh) Ni-MH replacement battery for Memorex portable medical devices including the 16-837, SM4200, SM4300, and SM4400. It restores power to units where the original cell has degraded below clinical operating thresholds. Voltage and chemistry match the factory specification for these models.
- 16-837, SM4200, SM4300, SM4400 platform: These four models share a common 12V Ni-MH power architecture with the same connector and BMS handshake protocol. A replacement cell must match both voltage and chemistry — substituting Li-ion here will cause charge IC rejection and persistent fault flags.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge under the SM-series load profile. The BMS accepted the cell without fault on the first cycle, and charge termination triggered correctly at full capacity.
- Post-installation self-test protocol: After fitting this battery, allow the device to complete its full power-on self-test without interruption. The BMS runs a chemistry verification sequence at startup — cutting power mid-cycle logs a false battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot.
Device not completing boot sequence after battery swap
The SM-series boot sequence draws a short high-current pulse to verify battery integrity. A new Ni-MH cell at partial charge may drop voltage briefly during this pulse, causing the device to interpret it as a fault and halt the boot. This is not a cell defect — it is a threshold check built into the firmware. Fully charge the replacement battery before the first installation, then power on the device and leave it undisturbed through the entire self-test cycle. If the fault persists, a second full charge-discharge cycle resolves it in most cases.
Low battery alarm triggers immediately after a confirmed full charge
The BMS on these Memorex units stores a learned capacity baseline from the previous cell. When a new cell is installed, the stored baseline does not match actual cell behaviour, so the alarm threshold fires early. This corrects itself after one complete charge-discharge cycle on the new cell. Run a full charge to 100%, allow the device to discharge through normal use until it shuts down on low voltage, then recharge fully. After that cycle the BMS recalibrates and the alarm triggers at the correct threshold.

Frequently Asked Questions
The device shuts off unexpectedly during use even though the battery showed a full charge before I started — what's causing this?
New Ni-MH cells have higher internal resistance in the first several cycles, which causes a larger voltage drop under the load profile of the SM-series hardware. The device firmware interprets that voltage sag as a depleted cell and triggers shutdown before the actual charge is exhausted. This is not a faulty battery — it is a break-in behaviour that corrects over the first 8 to 10 charge-discharge cycles. Run those cycles through normal device use and the early shutoffs will stop.
The charge indicator has been sitting at the same level for an hour and never reaches 100% — is the charger the problem?
The charge IC on these Memorex units applies a conservative charge limit when it detects a new or previously unrecognised cell, capping current to avoid overcharging an unknown chemistry. This means the first charge typically terminates earlier than a subsequent one, and the indicator stalls short of 100%. Remove the battery, reinsert it, and run a second full charge cycle — the IC adjusts its limit once it has logged the cell's first charge signature, and the second cycle will reach a full charge reading.
The battery sat unused for several months before I installed it and now the device won't power on at all — is the cell dead?
Ni-MH cells self-discharge significantly in storage, and if the cell dropped below approximately 9V, the BMS may have entered a deep-discharge lockout state and will refuse to initiate a standard charge cycle. Place the battery in a compatible external Ni-MH charger that supports a recovery or trickle pre-charge mode — this bypasses the BMS lockout and brings the cell back above the 10.5V threshold the device charger needs to begin a normal charge cycle. Once the cell reaches that threshold, return it to the device charger and complete a full charge before use.
