Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Nihon Kohden PVM-2700 Series — 9.6V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (SB-201P)
This is a 9.6V, 3800mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Nihon Kohden PVM-2700 series patient monitors. It fits the PVM-2700, PVM-2701, PVM-2703, and related variants used in clinical vital signs monitoring. Capacity matches the original SB-201P specification exactly — 3800mAh (36.48Wh).
- PVM-2700 series compatibility: These monitors share a common battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake profile across the PVM-2700, PVM-2701, and PVM-2703. The 9.6V Ni-MH rail is fixed across the platform — swapping between variants requires no adapter or wiring change.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through the PVM-2700 charge cycle and monitored BMS communication. The charge IC accepted the cell without fault codes, and the BMS reported state-of-charge correctly after one full charge-discharge conditioning cycle.
- Post-installation self-test requirement: After fitting this battery, allow the monitor to complete its full power-on self-test without interrupting the boot sequence. The PVM-2700 runs a BMS verification at startup — cutting power during this window logs a false battery fault that persists until the next clean reboot.
PVM-2700 low battery alarm triggering immediately after a confirmed full charge
The PVM-2700's BMS uses a learned capacity threshold calibrated to the previous cell's charge history. A new Ni-MH cell hasn't completed a BMS learn cycle, so the monitor compares its state-of-charge estimate against stale reference data and trips the alarm early. This is not a faulty battery. Run one full charge-discharge cycle — charge to completion on the monitor, allow normal use until the low battery warning appears, then recharge fully. After that cycle, the BMS recalibrates and the alarm threshold aligns to the new cell.
Monitor will not power on after the replacement battery has been in storage
Ni-MH cells self-discharge at roughly 1–2% per day in storage. If this battery sat unused for several months before installation, its resting voltage may have dropped below the PVM-2700's BMS recovery threshold — typically around 8.5V on a 9.6V pack. The BMS interprets this as a damaged or deeply discharged cell and blocks startup to protect the monitor's power circuitry. Connect the monitor to mains power and leave it on AC for at least 90 minutes before attempting a battery-only boot. The charge IC will trickle-charge the pack back above the recovery threshold, after which normal charging and BMS communication resume.

Frequently Asked Questions
The PVM-2700 keeps alarming low battery even though the new battery just finished charging — is the battery faulty?
It's almost always the BMS, not the cell. The monitor's battery management system retains capacity thresholds from the old cell and flags a new one as low because it hasn't completed a learn cycle yet. Run one full charge-discharge cycle on the monitor before clinical use — charge completely, use on battery until the low alert appears, then recharge to 100%. The alarm clears after that first calibration cycle.
The charge indicator on the PVM-2700 won't reach 100% on the first charge with this new battery — should we keep charging it?
The PVM-2700 charge IC applies a conservative current limit on cells it hasn't profiled yet, which causes the indicator to plateau short of 100% on the first pass. This is the charge controller being cautious with an unprofiled Ni-MH cell, not a fault. Leave the monitor on AC charge for a full uninterrupted cycle — typically the indicator reaches full on the second charge after the IC has logged the cell's response curve. Do not interrupt charging during this initial session.
The PVM-2700 shut off unexpectedly during use, but the battery read over 50% charge beforehand — what caused it?
New Ni-MH cells in their first 10 cycles have higher internal resistance than a conditioned pack. Under the PVM-2700's monitoring load — continuous ECG, SpO2, and display — voltage sag across that internal resistance can momentarily drop below the BMS cutoff threshold even when the state-of-charge indicator reads mid-range. The BMS treats this as a protective shutdown, not an empty battery. After 5–10 full charge-discharge cycles, internal resistance drops and the shutdowns stop. Confirm the cell is conditioned before returning the monitor to unsupervised clinical use.
