Nothing is wrong. Ni-MH cells need three to five full charge-and-discharge cycles before they reach rated capacity. Talk time will be noticeably shorter in the first few uses. Run the handset down until it beeps, then return it to the base for a full charge each time. By cycle five, capacity should be at or near the rated 300mAh.

The KX-T991DL handset lost its pairing with the base after I swapped the battery — how do I fix it?

Some DECT phones drop their pairing memory when power is fully removed during a battery change. This is a handset firmware behaviour, not a battery fault.
