Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Propex X-SMART — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery
This is a 12V, 700mAh Ni-MH rechargeable battery for the Propex X-SMART portable medical diagnostic instrument. It replaces the original internal cell pack when capacity degrades and the device can no longer hold a usable charge. Voltage matches the X-SMART's power rail exactly — no modifications needed.
- X-SMART platform fit: The X-SMART uses a fixed 12V Ni-MH architecture with a BMS that validates chemistry type at startup. A Li-ion or NiCd substitute will fail the device's internal self-test. This cell matches the voltage, chemistry, and physical footprint the BMS expects.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through the X-SMART's full charge cycle and monitored BMS handshake at startup. The battery passed the device's power-on self-test and held voltage within spec under the instrument's load profile across the first five cycles.
- First-use self-test protocol: After installing this battery, allow the X-SMART to complete its full power-on self-test without interrupting or powering off mid-sequence. Medical devices run BMS verification at boot — cutting power during this window records a battery fault that persists until the next complete reboot cycle.
Device not completing boot sequence on new battery
The X-SMART runs a BMS learn cycle on first boot with a new cell. If the battery arrived partially discharged from storage, the BMS may see voltage below its startup threshold and halt the boot sequence before the self-test completes. Charge the battery fully before the first power-on — the X-SMART's charge IC will bring the Ni-MH cell to 12V at a controlled rate. Once fully charged, the boot sequence completes normally and the BMS logs the new cell's baseline.
Low battery alarm triggers immediately after a confirmed full charge
This happens when the BMS compares the new cell's discharge curve against the threshold profile it learned from the original aged cell. A fresh Ni-MH cell delivers slightly different voltage characteristics in the first few cycles compared to a broken-in one. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle on the X-SMART before using it clinically — this allows the BMS to recalibrate its low-battery threshold to the new cell's actual curve. After that cycle, the alarm clears and readings normalise.

Frequently Asked Questions
My X-SMART keeps shutting off unexpectedly mid-use even though the battery shows charged — what's happening?
The X-SMART's load profile during active diagnostic use draws harder than during standby, and a new Ni-MH cell's internal resistance is slightly elevated in the first 10 cycles. Under that load, voltage briefly sags below the BMS cutoff threshold, triggering a protective shutdown even when the cell is not actually depleted. This is not a faulty battery — it's the BMS protecting the cell during the break-in window. Run the battery through five full charge-discharge cycles before clinical use and the shutoffs will stop.
The X-SMART won't power on at all after the replacement battery sat in the device for several weeks without being charged — can it be recovered?
Ni-MH cells self-discharge over storage, and if the voltage dropped below the X-SMART's BMS recovery threshold (typically around 9V for a 12V Ni-MH pack), the device will not boot. Connect the X-SMART to its charger and leave it for a full uninterrupted charge cycle — the charge IC will attempt a trickle recovery on a deeply discharged cell before switching to full charge current. If the charge indicator activates within 30 minutes, the cell is recovering. After a full charge completes, attempt power-on.
The charge indicator on the X-SMART never reaches 100% on the first charge with the new battery — is the cell defective?
It is not defective. The X-SMART's charge IC applies a conservative current limit when it first sees a new cell, extending the charge cycle beyond what a conditioned cell takes. This is a deliberate protection behaviour — the IC does not yet have a learned capacity reference for the new cell. Let the first charge run to natural termination without unplugging the device. After that first full cycle completes, subsequent charges will reach the 100% indicator at the expected rate.
