Rowenta RH5488 Series — 12V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (RD-ROW12VA)

This is a 12V 2000mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Rowenta RH5488 cordless handheld vacuum cleaner. It also fits the RH846301, RH846901, and RS-RH5205 models, among others. Drop it in when the original cell no longer holds enough charge to run the suction motor through a full cleaning session.

  • RH5488 platform compatibility: These models share the same 12V power rail, physical connector, and BMS communication protocol — which is why one cell covers the full range. The pack slot dimensions match at 112.40 x 46.10 x 45.50mm.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge cycles on the RH5488 platform and confirmed the BMS accepted the pack without fault codes, and the motor spun up to full draw without triggering an overcurrent cutoff at startup.
  • Dock charging discipline on the RH5488: This model's charging circuit does not cut off automatically once the pack is full. Leave it docked continuously and the trickle current degrades cell capacity within weeks. Charge to full, then remove it from the dock.

Suction dropping before the battery indicator reaches low

The RH5488 motor draws significantly more current when the filter is partially blocked — the suction feels weak but the battery gauge still shows charge remaining. This is voltage sag under increased load, not a dead battery. The pack voltage drops under the motor's demand before the indicator circuit registers it as low. Clean or replace the filter first; if suction recovers immediately, the cell is fine.

Motor cutting out mid-use and recovering after a short pause

This is a BMS overcurrent trip, not a wiring fault. When suction is restricted — blocked nozzle, clogged filter, or carpet pile jamming the intake — the motor compensates by drawing more current than the BMS threshold allows. The BMS cuts the circuit, the motor stops, and it resets once current draw drops. Clear the blockage and check the filter before assuming the replacement pack is faulty. If the cutout still happens on an unobstructed surface, verify the charger brought the pack to a full 14.4V before use.

The Rowenta RH5488 ran fine for a few weeks after I replaced the battery, but now it barely has any suction power even on a freshly charged pack — what's happening?

A partially blocked filter forces the motor to draw above its rated current, which causes voltage to sag under load even from a healthy, fully charged pack. The battery isn't failing — the restricted airflow is making the motor work harder than the cell can sustain. Remove and clean or replace the filter, then recharge fully and test on a hard floor. If suction returns to normal, the pack is fine.

I leave my RH5488 on the charging dock between uses — the new battery already seems weaker after a month. Is the dock damaging it?

Yes. The RH5488 dock does not stop charging once the pack reaches full — it continues passing a low trickle current indefinitely. Ni-MH cells degrade faster under continuous trickle charge than from normal use cycles. Charge the pack fully, then physically remove the vacuum from the dock and store it off charge. That single change extends cell life significantly.

My RH5488 won't charge at all with the new replacement battery — the charger light doesn't react. What should I check first?

Some Rowenta chargers expect a minimum voltage from the pack before initiating a charge cycle — if the new cell arrived deeply discharged, the charger won't recognise it. Check that the pack voltage is above approximately 9V using a multimeter at the battery terminals. If it reads below that, a compatible Ni-MH charger set to a gentle conditioning or recovery mode can bring it back up to a level the dock charger will accept. Once it hits around 10V, return it to the Rowenta dock and the charge light should activate.
