Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage. If a Sokkia instrument sits unused long enough, the pack voltage drops below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 2.5V per cell for a 7.4V two-cell pack. At that point the BMS enters a protective lockout state and the instrument will not power on, even when placed on charge. A standard charger may show no activity or a fault light. The fix is a slow pre-charge at low current to bring cells back above the recovery threshold — most quality chargers handle this automatically if you leave the pack on charge for 30–60 minutes before expecting a normal charge cycle to begin.
Voltage dropout causing readings to reset mid-logging session
During an active logging session, the instrument draws sustained current across the processor, display, and positioning module simultaneously. If the battery cells have degraded or the pack voltage sags under that combined load, the instrument's voltage rail drops briefly below its operating floor and the device resets — wiping the active measurement set. This is not a firmware fault. The voltage sag triggers the instrument's own under-voltage protection. Replacing the pack and confirming resting voltage is at or above 8.2V after a full charge confirms the new cells are holding correctly before field use.

My Sokkia total station won't recognise the new battery at all — the screen stays blank even though the pack is fully charged.
The BMS on a freshly installed or long-stored pack can sit in sleep mode if cell voltage dropped during transit or storage. Place the pack in the charger and leave it for at least 45 minutes before attempting to power on — most chargers deliver a low-current pre-charge that wakes the BMS before switching to full charge mode. Once the charger shows a normal charge cycle running, the instrument should recognise the pack on the next power-on attempt. If the charger still shows no activity after 45 minutes, check that terminal contacts on both the pack and the instrument bay are clean and making full contact.
The instrument powers on fine but shuts down the moment I connect it to my PC for data transfer.
USB data transfer adds a meaningful draw on top of the instrument's normal operating load — processor, display, and USB controller all pull current simultaneously. If the battery cells are below around 7.2V resting voltage, that combined load causes a voltage sag that trips the instrument's under-voltage cutoff. Charge the pack fully before any PC transfer session and confirm the instrument shows a full charge indicator before connecting the USB cable.

This happens when a new pack is installed without running the instrument's calibration cycle first. The instrument builds its voltage-to-charge map during calibration, and without that step it defaults to thresholds calibrated for the old, worn cells — making the new pack appear to drain rapidly. Go into the instrument menu and run a full calibration cycle before field deployment. After calibration completes, the battery indicator will track the actual state of the new cells correctly.
