Fits Sony Action Cam Mini AZ1 and HDR-AZ1 series; replaces OEM NP-BY1.
This 3.7V 640mAh cell delivers the same energy envelope as the factory pack for consistent frame counts across shooting sessions.
Connector slides into the battery door slot with a single locking tab; orientation is keyed to prevent reverse install.
We bench-tested this cell in an AZ1 body on video capture mode; the BMS accepted the pack without fault codes on first charge cycle.
On initial use with this Sony pack, charge once inside the camera body before extended shoots — the AZ1 firmware maps charge curves to new cells during that first cycle.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony Action Cam Mini AZ1 / HDR-AZ1 Series — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery (NP-BY1)

This is a 3.7V, 640mAh (2.37Wh) Li-ion cell built to the NP-BY1 specification. It fits the Sony Action Cam Mini AZ1, HDR-AZ1, HDR-AZ1/W, and HDR-AZ1VR. The cell matches the original's footprint exactly at 38.20 × 26.82 × 7.34mm, so it seats and locks without modification.

  • AZ1 series compatibility: The HDR-AZ1 family shares a single battery bay spec — same voltage rail, same lock tab position, same BMS handshake protocol across all variants. One cell works across the full lineup listed above.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on an HDR-AZ1 body. The BMS accepted the cell on first install, reported state-of-charge without error, and held the protection circuit cutoff at the correct low-voltage threshold.
  • First-cycle initialisation on the AZ1: The AZ1's battery indicator can misread a new cell if you pull it mid-charge. Run the first charge to 100% uninterrupted — either in the camera body or the BC-BY1 charger — before shooting. This lets the BMS map the cell's discharge curve accurately from the start.

Why the AZ1 rejects a third-party cell on first install

Sony's AZ1 BMS runs a voltage-window check the moment a battery seats. If the cell arrives at the camera below roughly 3.0V — common after extended warehouse storage — the body flags it as unreadable and shows a blinking battery icon. This is not a compatibility fault. Place the cell in the BC-BY1 external charger first and bring it to full charge before inserting it into the camera. Once the BMS sees the cell enter from a known-good voltage, it accepts and tracks it normally on every subsequent cycle.

Battery percentage jumping erratically on the AZ1 display

The AZ1 maps remaining capacity using voltage thresholds calibrated to Sony's original NP-BY1 discharge curve. A new replacement cell — even a spec-matched one — can show percentage jumps of 20–30% between readings until the camera's BMS has logged one or two full charge-discharge cycles. The cause is a mismatch between the camera's expected voltage steps and the actual curve of the new cell. Run two full cycles from 100% charge to automatic shutoff and the indicator stabilises.

Frequently Asked Questions

The AZ1 shows a blinking battery icon and won't power on with the new NP-BY1 cell — what's wrong?

The AZ1 performs a voltage-floor check on every battery insert. If the replacement cell shipped below approximately 3.0V after storage, the camera refuses to boot and blinks the battery icon. Put the cell in a BC-BY1 external charger and bring it to a full charge before putting it back in the camera. Once the BMS sees it enter from a charged state, it initialises correctly and the error clears.

The battery percentage on my HDR-AZ1 is jumping around — it just dropped from 60% to 20% in one clip.

The AZ1's percentage indicator maps to fixed voltage thresholds that were calibrated against Sony's original cell discharge curve. A new replacement cell has a slightly different curve, so the voltage-to-percentage translation skips steps. We confirmed this on the bench — it settles after one or two full cycles from 100% charge down to automatic camera shutoff. Don't pull the cell early during those two conditioning cycles.

My AZ1 drains significantly faster in cold weather — is the new cell faulty?

It's not faulty. Li-ion cells at 640mAh capacity lose internal capacity temporarily when ambient temperature drops below around 10°C, because lithium-ion chemistry slows charge transfer at low temperatures. The AZ1's compact housing gives the cell no thermal buffer, so cold air hits the cell directly. Keep a second cell in a chest or jacket pocket between swaps — body heat maintains the cell near room temperature and restores its usable capacity. Capacity returns fully once the cell warms back up.
