Fits Sony DCR-SR40, DCR-DVD703E, DCR-HC17 handycams; replaces NP-FP50, NP-FP30, NP-FP51 battery packs.
7.4V, 750mAh capacity delivers 5.55Wh total energy for extended recording sessions without mains power access.
Connector slides straight into camera body slot with positive terminal facing inward; locking tab seats flush against frame edge.
We ran full discharge cycles on DCR-SR40 body; BMS accepted cell on first install and held voltage curve through playback and recording modes.
On first use, charge this cell inside the camera body via AC adapter — Sony handycam firmware maps capacity to remaining-time display only after internal charge cycle completes.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony DCR-SR40 / DCR-HC17 Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (NP-FP50)

This is a 7.4V, 750mAh Li-ion battery pack replacing the NP-FP50 in Sony Handycam camcorders. It fits the DCR-SR40, DCR-DVD703E, DCR-HC17, DCR-DVD602E, and 96 additional models sharing the same FP-series battery slot. The NP-FP30 and NP-FP51 are also covered by this cell.

  • FP-series platform fit: Sony's compact Handycam lineup from this era shares a common 7.4V battery rail and identical connector pinout across the FP30, FP50, and FP51 variants. The BMS communicates capacity data over the same data line, so one cell covers the full range.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on a DCR-series body. The BMS accepted the cell without error flags, held voltage above 6.8V through the discharge curve, and the camera's remaining-battery indicator tracked consistently.
  • First-use charge cycle on the DCR-SR40: Run the first charge from inside the camera body or the OEM charger before shooting. The DCR-SR40's BMS maps its remaining-battery display to a discharge curve it calibrates on the first cycle — skipping this step causes the indicator to drop erratically mid-session.

Sony Handycam BMS rejecting a third-party cell on first install

Sony's FP-series BMS runs an authentication handshake on power-up. A new third-party cell sometimes fails this check and triggers a "battery info" or "incompatible battery" flag on the LCD. This is a communication timing issue, not a cell fault. Power the camera off, remove the battery, reinsert it, and power back on. If the flag persists, place the battery in the OEM charger for one full charge cycle before inserting it into the body — this initialises the cell's BMS state and resolves the handshake.

Battery percentage dropping suddenly from 50% to empty during recording

This happens when the camera's fuel gauge is calibrated to the original cell's discharge curve and the replacement cell has a slightly different voltage taper. The camera reads a voltage threshold it associates with a nearly empty cell and cuts the display accordingly, even if actual charge remains. Running one full charge-to-empty cycle allows the BMS to remap its thresholds to the new cell. After that single calibration cycle, the percentage readout stabilises across the discharge range.

Frequently Asked Questions

My DCR-SR40 shows "incompatible battery" after I fitted the replacement — is the cell faulty?

The cell is almost certainly fine. Sony's FP-series BMS runs a handshake on first power-up, and a new cell without a prior charge state can fail that check. Remove the battery, insert it into the OEM charger, and run one full charge cycle before putting it back in the camera body. That initialises the BMS state and clears the flag on the next power-up.

The battery percentage on my DCR-HC17 jumps from 60% straight to the low-battery warning after a few minutes of recording — what's going on?

The camera's fuel gauge is mapped to the original cell's voltage taper. When the replacement cell's discharge curve differs slightly, the camera hits a voltage threshold it reads as nearly empty — even though actual charge remains in the cell. Run one full charge-to-empty cycle so the BMS can remap its thresholds to the new cell's curve. After that calibration cycle, the percentage display tracks consistently through the full discharge range.

The DCR-SR40 drains noticeably faster in cold weather — is this a cell defect?

It's not a defect — it's a property of lithium-ion chemistry. Below around 10°C, internal cell resistance rises and usable capacity drops, sometimes noticeably on a 750mAh cell like the NP-FP50. Keep the camcorder inside a jacket pocket between shots rather than leaving it in cold air. Warming the camera body to room temperature before use recovers most of the capacity the cold suppresses.
