Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Sony Discman D-220 Series — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BP-DM10)

This is a 2.4V, 1800mAh Ni-MH replacement for the Sony BP-DM10 battery pack. It fits the Discman D-220, D-223, D-321, and D-4215P portable CD players. Capacity figures come from the product data — 4.32Wh total energy.

  • D-220 series compatibility: These Discman models share the same 2.4V two-cell Ni-MH architecture, physical form factor, and connector pinout. The BP-DM10 slot accepts this cell without modification across all listed variants.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this cell through charge and discharge on a D-220 unit. The internal protection circuit held charge termination correctly at full capacity, and the player's low-battery cutoff triggered at the expected voltage floor without premature shutdown.
  • Ni-MH cycle conditioning on first use: Ni-MH cells can arrive partially discharged from storage. Run one complete charge-discharge cycle before relying on the battery indicator — the Discman's charge circuit calibrates remaining-charge display against the cell's actual capacity after the first full cycle.

Why the Discman D-220 stops mid-track on a new battery

The D-220's optical pickup and spindle motor draw current in short bursts as the laser seeks and the disc accelerates. A fresh Ni-MH cell that hasn't been conditioned can show elevated internal resistance, causing a brief voltage sag during those bursts. The player's undervoltage protection reads that sag as a dead cell and cuts power. One full charge cycle reduces internal resistance and eliminates most mid-playback dropouts.

Battery indicator showing full — then player shuts off seconds later

Ni-MH cells have a relatively flat discharge curve, which means the Discman's simple voltage-threshold indicator stays in the "full" zone for most of the discharge, then drops fast at the end. A cell nearing the end of its capacity will appear fully charged right up until the voltage collapses below the 2.0V cutoff. If the player shuts off immediately after showing a full indicator, confirm cell voltage with a multimeter — a resting reading below 2.2V on a charged cell means the cell is no longer holding capacity and needs replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Discman D-220 won't power on at all with the new battery installed — what's actually happening?

Ni-MH cells stored in a discharged state can drop below the voltage threshold the Discman needs to start its power circuit — typically under 2.0V. The player won't boot, so it looks dead rather than low. Place the battery in an external Ni-MH charger for a full cycle first, then reinsert. If the player powers on after that charge, the cell arrived depleted from storage, not faulty.

The player keeps cutting out mid-disc even though the battery indicator shows it's not empty — is this a disc read issue or a battery issue?

It's usually the battery. The D-220's spindle motor draws a spike of current when recovering from a skip or re-seeking a track, and a cell with high internal resistance sags below the cutoff voltage during that spike. The indicator doesn't update fast enough to reflect instantaneous voltage drops, so it still shows partial charge when the player shuts off. Condition the cell with one full charge-discharge cycle — internal resistance drops significantly after the first cycle on a fresh Ni-MH cell.

The battery drains noticeably faster in cold weather — is this cell defective?

Ni-MH chemistry loses accessible capacity as temperature drops — around 20–30% capacity reduction is normal at temperatures near freezing. The cell isn't defective; the electrochemical reaction slows, raising internal resistance and compressing the usable voltage window. Keep the Discman in an inside jacket pocket when outdoors to maintain cell temperature above 10°C, which is enough to recover most of that capacity loss.
