Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

South X11 Data Controller — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BP-5S)
This is a 7.4V, 2600mAh Li-ion replacement for the South BP-5S battery pack. It fits the X11 Data Controller — a field surveying instrument used for data collection, positioning, and mapping work. Voltage, connector, and BMS communication match the original pack specification.
- X11 Data Controller fit: The X11 runs a 7.4V rail with a BMS handshake that checks cell voltage and pack ID at power-on. This replacement carries the correct two-cell Li-ion configuration and communicates cleanly with the X11's charge management circuit — no forced workarounds needed.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and discharge sequences on the X11 platform. The BMS reported no fault codes, accepted a standard CC/CV charge profile, and held the voltage rail steady under sustained sensor and GPS logging load.
- First-use calibration on the X11: After installing this pack, run a full calibration cycle from the X11 instrument menu before heading to site. The instrument maps battery state during that sequence — skip it, and the low-battery warning will trigger early on your first measurement session even with a full charge.
BMS lockout after the X11 sat unused in a carry case for months
Li-ion cells self-discharge slowly in storage. If the X11 sat unused long enough, the pack can drop below the BMS recovery threshold — typically around 2.5V per cell. At that point, the controller treats the pack as a fault condition and blocks normal charging. Most chargers will not attempt recovery automatically. Connect the pack to a Li-ion charger that supports a pre-charge or recovery mode, which applies a low current until cell voltage climbs above 3.0V per cell, then resumes normal charging.
X11 shuts down mid-session during active GPS or data logging
Sustained GPS acquisition combined with active logging draws continuous current that a degraded or partially charged cell struggles to sustain. When cell voltage sags under that load, the BMS trips a low-voltage cutoff to protect the cells — the instrument shuts off even if the battery indicator showed capacity remaining. This is a voltage-sag cutoff, not a capacity failure. Charge the pack to full before field deployment and verify cell voltage reads above 8.0V at the X11 battery status screen before starting a long logging session.

Frequently Asked Questions
The X11 powered back on fine in the office, but shut off during USB data transfer to the PC — why?
USB data transfer adds a second load path on top of the instrument's own processor and GPS module. The combined draw pulls more current than the instrument uses at idle, and if the cell voltage is already slightly low, that spike triggers the BMS low-voltage cutoff. This is not a faulty pack — it is a voltage threshold trip under combined load. Charge the battery fully before transferring data, and confirm the X11 battery status screen reads above 8.0V before connecting the USB cable.
My X11 shows a low-battery warning almost immediately after fitting the new pack and powering on — is something wrong?
Nothing is wrong with the pack. The X11 maps battery state during its calibration cycle, and if that cycle was skipped after installing the new battery, the instrument's voltage-threshold indicator is still calibrated to the old, degraded cell profile. It reads the new pack's resting voltage against the wrong reference and throws an early warning. Go into the X11 instrument menu, run a full calibration cycle, and the indicator will recalibrate to the new cell — the premature warnings will stop.
The BP-5S pack won't take a charge after sitting unused for several months — charger shows no activity.
The cells have self-discharged below the BMS recovery threshold, which is typically around 2.5V per cell. Standard chargers detect this as a fault and refuse to begin a charge cycle. You need a Li-ion charger with a pre-charge or recovery mode — it applies a low trickle current until each cell climbs back above 3.0V, then switches to a normal CC/CV profile. Once the pack reaches 3.0V per cell, reconnect it to your standard charger and complete the full charge before installing it in the X11.
