Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Topcon ES Total Station Series — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BT-L2)
The BT-L2 is a 7.4V 4200mAh lithium-ion battery for the Topcon ES Total Station series, including the ES-602, ES-602G, and ES-600G. It slots into the battery compartment of these instruments and powers the theodolite, EDM, and display systems during fieldwork. Capacity figure is sourced from the product data at 31.08Wh.
- ES-600G, ES-602, and ES-602G compatibility: These models share the same 7.4V battery rail, BT-L2 form factor, and BMS handshake protocol. The connector and cell group configuration are identical across this ES platform, so one part number covers all listed variants without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through the ES instrument's full startup sequence, including EDM initialisation and angle encoder power-up. The BMS handled the inrush current at prism lock-on without tripping, and cell voltage held steady across sustained distance measurement cycles.
- Post-install calibration step: After fitting this battery, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument's adjustment menu before heading to site. The ES series maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes the low-battery warning to trigger early on the first measurement session, even with a fully charged pack.
BMS lockout on the ES Total Station after the pack sat unused for months
Li-ion cells self-discharge slowly in storage. If the BT-L2 sits in the instrument or loose in a case for several months, cell voltage can drop below the BMS's recovery threshold — typically around 2.5V per cell. At that point, the BMS enters a protection lockout and the charger shows no activity or a fault indicator. To recover the pack, place it on the OEM charger and leave it connected for up to 90 minutes without interruption; the charger applies a low trickle current to nudge the cells back above the 2.5V threshold before switching to standard charge mode.
ES Total Station shuts down mid-measurement with the battery indicator still showing charge
This happens when the voltage indicator hasn't recalibrated to the new pack's discharge curve. The ES instrument reads voltage thresholds set during previous cycles, and a fresh cell with a different curve can hit the instrument's cutoff trigger while still carrying usable charge. Run two full charge-discharge cycles through normal field use, then check whether the shutdown point shifts. After two cycles, the threshold recalibrates and the instrument reads remaining capacity accurately — if shutdown persists below 7.0V under load, check the battery contacts for oxidation.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Topcon ES powers on fine but shuts off the moment it locks onto a prism — what's causing that?
The EDM ranging module draws a sharp current spike at the moment of prism lock, and a BMS set conservatively can read that spike as an overload and cut output. We saw this on the bench when the pack was cold — below 10°C, internal resistance rises enough that the voltage dip at lock-on crosses the BMS trip threshold. Warm the instrument to ambient temperature before powering on, and if the cutoff still happens, check that the battery contacts are clean and seated fully, as resistance at a dirty contact amplifies the voltage sag.
The ES Total Station won't recognise the new BT-L2 after it arrived — the screen shows nothing and the charger light stays red.
A red charger light with no screen activity points to the BMS being in deep-discharge sleep mode from storage. The cells are below the recovery voltage and the BMS is blocking charge input as a protection measure. Connect the battery to the OEM charger and leave it uninterrupted for 60–90 minutes — the charger applies a pre-charge trickle that brings the cells back above 2.5V per cell, at which point the BMS releases and normal charging begins. Do not switch chargers or disconnect during this window or the trickle cycle resets.
Angle readings on the ES drift and reset themselves during a logging session — could the battery be causing this?
Yes. Sustained data logging keeps the processor, angle encoders, and display all drawing current simultaneously, and if the pack voltage sags under that combined load, the instrument's processor can brownout briefly — enough to reset the active measurement without fully powering off. This is a voltage-dropout failure, not a software glitch. Check the pack's resting voltage before the session: it should read at least 7.8V fully charged. If it reads below 7.4V at rest, the cells have degraded and can't hold voltage under the logging load — replace the pack.
