Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping
🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Topcon SX-1 / GP-SX1 Total Station — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery (BT-1A)
This 7.4V 3400mAh Li-ion battery replaces the Topcon BT-1A and CGR-B/201LC cells used in the SX-1 and GP-SX1 total stations. It fits the battery bay directly and connects to the instrument's onboard BMS without modification. Capacity is 3400mAh (25.16Wh) — matched to the original specification.
- SX-1 and GP-SX1 compatibility: Both models share the same battery bay dimensions, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. The 7.4V rail feeds the angle encoder, EDM module, and display from a single regulated source — any deviation in cell voltage triggers an immediate shutdown.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through EDM ranging bursts and continuous angle logging. The BMS held the 7.4V rail steady under combined sensor and display load, and the protection circuit tripped correctly at low-voltage cutoff without locking the pack.
- First-use calibration cycle: After installing a new pack, run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu before field deployment. The SX-1 maps battery state during calibration — skipping this step causes premature low-battery warnings on the first measurement session, even with a fully charged cell.
Why the SX-1 shuts down at instrument power-up despite a charged battery
At startup, the SX-1 initialises the EDM module, angle encoders, and display simultaneously. That combined inrush current can spike well above steady-state draw and trip a BMS with a conservative overcurrent threshold. A pack that has been stored partially discharged is especially vulnerable — cell internal resistance rises during storage, amplifying the voltage sag during that startup surge. If the BMS trips, the instrument cuts power before the boot sequence completes, which looks like a dead battery even when the pack shows charge. Letting the pack charge fully before the first power-on reduces internal resistance and lowers the risk of a false BMS cutoff.
SX-1 displaying inconsistent battery percentage after swapping to a new pack
The SX-1 estimates state-of-charge by comparing cell voltage against a stored threshold table calibrated to the original pack's discharge curve. A new cell with slightly different resting voltage will read out of step with that table until the instrument recalibrates. This shows up as a percentage that jumps — often reading 100% then dropping sharply after the first measurement session. Run one full discharge-to-cutoff cycle followed by a complete charge, then run the instrument calibration routine. After that cycle, the percentage display stabilises and tracks accurately.

Frequently Asked Questions
The SX-1 won't recognise the new battery after the instrument sat unused for several months — is the pack dead?
Most likely the pack entered BMS sleep mode during storage, which happens when cell voltage drops below the recovery threshold — typically around 2.5V per cell. The instrument cannot communicate with a pack in sleep mode, so it shows no battery or refuses to boot. Connect the pack to a compatible Li-ion charger and leave it on charge for at least 30 minutes before trying to power on the instrument. If the charger shows any charge activity, the pack is recovering — let it complete a full charge cycle before use.
Readings drift or the display resets mid-session during a long data-logging run — what causes that?
Under sustained sensor load — continuous angle updates, EDM ranging, and data logging running together — the 7.4V rail can sag if the pack's cells have degraded capacity. When rail voltage drops below the instrument's operating floor, the SX-1 resets the active measurement session to protect data integrity, even though the battery indicator still shows charge remaining. This is a voltage dropout failure, not a BMS trip. Check cell voltage under load with a multimeter at the battery contacts; if it sags below 6.8V during active measurement, the pack needs replacement.
The SX-1 powers on normally but cuts out the moment we initiate a USB data transfer to the laptop — why?
USB data transfer adds a sustained draw on top of the instrument's normal operating load — display, encoders, and communication module all active simultaneously. If the pack's internal resistance is elevated from age or partial discharge, this combined draw causes enough voltage sag to hit the low-voltage cutoff threshold, and the BMS shuts the pack down to protect the cells. The fix is to ensure the pack is at full charge before starting any transfer session. Charge to 8.4V (full charge voltage for a 7.4V Li-ion pack) and confirm the charger indicates complete before connecting the USB cable.
