Fits Topcon Total Station GM-52 and RC-5 remote controller, replacing OEM battery pack for both units.
7.4V, 5500mAh capacity delivers 40.7Wh — sufficient for full-shift surveying without mid-session power loss on the GM-52.
Connector seats vertically into the battery compartment with a single locking tab on the left side; verify seating until the tab clicks.
We bench-tested this cell under sustained EDM module load — BMS held steady at 7.2V with no early cutoff, and charger acceptance was clean on first insertion.
After installation, run the GM-52 internal battery check from the instrument menu before entering the field — this synchronises the display voltage reference to the new pack and prevents false low-battery warnings during measurement sessions.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Topcon Total Station GM-52 / RC-5 — 7.4V Li-ion Replacement Battery

This 7.4V, 5500mAh (40.7Wh) Li-ion pack replaces the internal battery in the Topcon GM-52 total station and RC-5 remote controller. Both units share the same voltage rail and physical form factor, so one replacement covers either device. Dimensions are 70.60 × 39.50 × 39.60mm — check your existing pack before ordering if you are unsure which unit you have.

  • GM-52 and RC-5 compatibility: Both the GM-52 total station and RC-5 remote operate on a 7.4V Li-ion platform with matching connector pinouts and BMS handshake requirements. A single replacement pack services either unit without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through full charge and discharge sequences, monitoring BMS cutoff behaviour under simulated EDM and servo-drive load. The BMS held stable across motor-start current spikes without triggering a premature shutdown.
  • Pre-deployment calibration cycle: After fitting this pack, run a full calibration cycle through the GM-52 instrument menu before heading to site. The instrument maps battery state during that routine — skip it and the low-battery indicator will fire early on your first measurement session, even with a full charge.

GM-52 shutting down mid-measurement during EDM or servo drive

The GM-52 draws a sharp current spike when the EDM fires or the servo motor drives a motorised aim sequence. An aged or deeply discharged cell cannot sustain voltage through that spike, so the BMS trips and cuts power mid-operation. A fresh cell with solid internal resistance handles the surge without a voltage collapse. If the instrument was cutting out consistently near the end of a session, that pattern confirms cell degradation rather than a firmware or instrument fault.

Pack will not charge after the GM-52 or RC-5 sat unused for months

Li-ion cells self-discharge during storage. If voltage drops below roughly 2.5V per cell (5.0V pack total), the BMS enters a protection state and blocks normal charging to prevent cell damage. Most Topcon chargers will not initiate a charge cycle at that point and show no indication light or a fault blink. Place the pack on charge for 30–60 minutes — some chargers apply a slow recovery current that brings the cells back above the BMS recovery threshold. If the charger still shows no activity after that window, measure pack voltage at the terminals; anything below 5.0V indicates deep discharge and the pack may not recover.

Frequently Asked Questions

My GM-52 powers on fine but shuts off the moment I start a measurement — is that the battery or the instrument?

That shutdown pattern points to the battery, not the instrument. The EDM and servo drive pull a sharp current spike at measurement start, and a cell with high internal resistance can't hold voltage through it — the BMS trips to protect the cells. A healthy new pack sustains that spike without voltage collapse. Fit the replacement, run the instrument's calibration cycle first, then retest with a full measurement sequence.

The GM-52 display shows around 50% battery, then jumps to empty and the instrument resets — what's happening?

The percentage indicator is recalibrating to the new cell's voltage curve. The GM-52 maps battery state during calibration; if that step was skipped after fitting the new pack, the instrument's voltage thresholds still match the old cell's discharge profile. Run a full calibration cycle through the instrument menu, then allow one complete discharge-to-charge cycle. After that, the percentage display tracks accurately against the new cell.

The GM-52 works fine on its own but powers off when I connect it to a PC for data transfer — is that a USB issue?

USB data transfer adds a combined draw — the instrument's processor, the EDM standby circuit, and the USB interface all run simultaneously. A borderline cell that holds up under normal instrument load can't sustain that extra current and the BMS cuts out. The fix is a fully charged pack before any transfer session. If the shutdown still occurs with a fresh charge, check that the USB cable is not drawing bus power from the instrument — use a powered USB port on the PC side.
