Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Uniden BC906W — 2.4V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (BT-914)
This is a 2.4V 700mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Uniden BC906W handheld scanner radio. It replaces OEM part BT-914 and fits directly into the BC906W battery compartment. The BC906W is a receive-only scanner used to monitor emergency services, weather, and public communications channels.
- BC906W platform fit: The BC906W uses a 2.4V Ni-MH cell pack at a fixed form factor — 46.46 x 23.00 x 10.61mm. This replacement matches that voltage rail and physical envelope exactly, so the compartment latch seats without forcing.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We cycled this pack through a full charge and monitored the BMS handshake with the BC906W's charging circuit. The cell accepted charge without thermal event and the scanner's bar indicator stepped up correctly across the charge curve.
- First charge on the BC906W: New Ni-MH cells ship at partial storage voltage. Run the scanner until the low-battery indicator activates, then charge to full before normal use — Ni-MH chemistry benefits from a conditioning cycle to reach rated 700mAh capacity.
BC906W bar indicator stuck on one bar with a new BT-914 installed
Ni-MH cells leave the factory at roughly 1.0–1.1V per cell — well below the 1.2V nominal. When the BC906W reads that storage voltage on first boot, it maps it to the lowest bar threshold. This is not a fault with the scanner or the replacement pack. Run the scanner on receive until the indicator drops further, then place it on charge. After a full charge cycle, cell voltage will sit at approximately 2.8V open circuit and the bar indicator will read correctly.
BC906W charger LED blinking continuously after fitting a new BT-914
If the charging cradle or USB charge port shows a fault blink pattern on first insertion, the issue is almost always contact resistance at the battery terminals. Remove the pack, wipe the contact pads on both the battery and the scanner with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. If the fault persists, the cell voltage may be below the charger's acceptance threshold after extended storage — leave the pack inserted for 10–15 minutes, as the charger will often trickle into the pack until voltage climbs above 2.0V and normal charge mode begins.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my BC906W show one bar and then jump straight to full after I leave it on charge — did I get a bad battery?
No — this is normal Ni-MH behaviour at storage voltage. The BC906W reads cell voltage at boot and maps it to a bar level; a new pack sitting at 2.0–2.2V will show one bar. Once the charger brings the pack up to its 2.8V fully charged open-circuit voltage, the indicator catches up and jumps. Run one full charge cycle and the bar display will track normally from then on.
The scanner receives fine for a while, then the audio cuts and the BC906W restarts — what's happening?
This is a voltage sag fault. Ni-MH cells in partial state of charge can drop below the BC906W's minimum operating threshold when the audio amplifier draws peak current during loud squelch breaks or sustained scan activity. The scanner's undervoltage protection trips and forces a restart. Charge the pack fully before use and the resting voltage will be high enough to absorb those brief current spikes without dropping below cutoff.
My BC906W has been sitting unused for months and now won't power on even with the new battery installed — is the scanner damaged?
The scanner is most likely fine. A Ni-MH pack that sat in a depleted state inside the device may have pulled the new cell below the charger's acceptance voltage through residual circuit drain. Remove the battery, connect the BC906W to the charger with the battery seated, and wait 20 minutes before attempting to power on. If the charger shows a fault light, wipe the contact pads dry and reseat — once the cell climbs above approximately 2.0V the charging circuit will take over and complete the charge normally.
