My Wolf Garten grass shears cut fine for a few snips then the blades slow down and feel weak — is the battery dying or is something else wrong?

At 3.6V Ni-MH this capacity drop under load is almost always voltage sag — the cell can't sustain current once the blades hit thick grass stems, so the tool bogs before the battery is actually flat. First check whether the pack ever had a full conditioning cycle; Ni-MH cells that have only seen shallow charges develop memory effect fast and lose usable voltage early in the discharge curve. Pull the shears off the charger, let them run on a patch of light grass until they stop completely, then recharge fully — do that two or three times before assuming the replacement cell is faulty. If the blades still slow mid-cut after conditioning, measure the pack voltage under load with a multimeter; a healthy 3.6V Ni-MH should hold above 3.0V while cutting.

Ni-MH chargers for low-voltage packs like this use a small sense current to detect the cell before switching to full charge, and if the replacement pack voltage is below roughly 1V per cell the charger reads it as a fault or an open circuit and won't start. Leave the pack on the charger for 20–30 minutes anyway — some units trickle at a very low rate to recover a deeply discharged cell before the main charge kicks in. If there is still no response, use a 9V battery and two wires to briefly pulse the pack terminals for two or three seconds, which is enough to raise cell voltage above the detection threshold without damaging the chemistry. After that primer pulse, reseat the pack in the charger and the sense circuit should pick it up and begin a normal charge.

A replacement cell that then gets stored the same way will fail the same way; charge the new pack within a day of fitting it and store the shears either fully charged or give them a top-up charge every six to eight weeks through winter. To confirm the old cell is genuinely dead rather than just deeply discharged, charge it completely and immediately measure open-circuit voltage — a failed Ni-MH pack will read under 3.0V within a minute of coming off the charger. If the new pack shows the same symptom after a full charge and two conditioning cycles, check the blade mechanism for friction or binding that might be drawing excess current and collapsing the cell faster than expected.
