On first charge, the Perfusor's charge controller applies a conservative current limit to an unrecognised cell, capping the reported state-of-charge below 100%. This is the charge IC protecting against overvoltage on an unknown pack — not a fault with the battery. Run one full charge cycle to completion, then discharge the pump under normal load, and charge again. After this second charge the controller should report 100% at a cell voltage of approximately 8.4V.

The replacement battery sat in a drawer for several months before installation and now the Perfusor won't power on at all — is the battery dead?

Li-ion cells self-discharge in storage, and if this cell dropped below the pump's BMS recovery threshold — typically around 2.5V per cell, or 5.0V for the pack — the protection circuit has locked out the output to prevent damage. Connect the pump to mains power and leave it on charge for a minimum of four hours before attempting to power on from battery alone. Most BMS circuits include a trickle-recovery mode that will bring a deeply discharged cell back above the lockout threshold without requiring any intervention beyond sustained charge input.

The Perfusor Compact Plus shows a battery fault error on the display immediately after the self-test completes — the battery is fully charged and the pump runs fine on mains power.

This is a BMS learn-cycle failure — the pump completed its self-test but the charge-state algorithm could not validate the new cell's capacity signature against its stored reference. The fault clears after one full charge-discharge cycle that gives the BMS enough data to build an accurate capacity model for the replacement cell. Charge the pump to full on mains, run it on battery to the low-battery warning, then recharge fully. After that cycle, re-run the self-test and confirm the fault is gone before returning the pump to clinical use.
