Battery Care Tips
Battery Care Tips
🔹 Getting Started
Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.
🔹 Keep It Healthy
Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Drift HD170 / HD170S — 3.7V Li-ion Replacement Battery
This is a 3.7V 1050mAh Li-ion battery for the Drift HD170 and HD170S action cameras. It fits both variants of the HD170 body and matches the original cell's physical dimensions at 53.20 x 35.30 x 7.10mm. Capacity is sourced from the product specification — 1050mAh (3.89Wh).
- HD170 and HD170S compatibility: Both models share the same battery bay, connector pinout, and BMS handshake protocol. A single cell covers both without modification.
- Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this cell through charge and discharge cycles on the HD170 platform. The onboard BMS accepted the cell without error flags and held voltage within the expected discharge curve under continuous 1080p recording load.
- First-use charge cycle on the HD170: Insert the battery and charge it fully inside the camera body before your first recording session. The HD170's BMS maps the new cell's charge curve during this first in-body cycle — skipping it can cause the remaining battery indicator to read inaccurately throughout the cell's life.
Why the HD170 battery indicator reads full then drops suddenly
The HD170 uses a voltage-threshold method to estimate charge level rather than a coulomb-counting fuel gauge. A new Li-ion cell has a flatter discharge curve than an aged original battery, so the camera's fixed voltage thresholds don't map cleanly to the new cell's actual state of charge. The result is an indicator that stays at full longer than expected, then steps down quickly near the end. Completing one full in-body charge cycle recalibrates the reference point and narrows this gap.
HD170 showing no battery or refusing to power on with a new cell installed
This happens when the BMS has not completed its initial authentication pass on the new cell. The camera expects a minimum resting voltage — typically above 3.5V — before it will boot. If the replacement cell shipped in a low storage state, the camera may refuse to start. Connect the camera to its OEM charger or a USB source first, allow it to charge for at least 15 minutes, then attempt to power on. If the camera still shows no battery, reseat the cell and confirm the contacts are clean and fully engaged.

Frequently Asked Questions
My HD170 battery percentage jumps from 60% straight down to 10% without warning — is the new cell faulty?
The cell is not faulty. The HD170 reads voltage at fixed thresholds to estimate charge, and a fresh Li-ion cell holds a flatter discharge curve than the worn original it replaced. The camera's thresholds weren't calibrated for a full-capacity cell, so the indicator skips steps rather than stepping down gradually. Run one complete charge and discharge cycle entirely inside the camera body and the indicator will track more consistently from the second cycle onward.
The HD170 records fine indoors but the battery drains noticeably faster when shooting in cold weather — what's happening?
Li-ion cells lose usable capacity in cold conditions because lower temperatures increase internal resistance and reduce the voltage the cell can sustain under load. On the HD170, continuous video recording draws enough current that voltage sag becomes significant below around 10°C, causing the BMS to cut off earlier than it would at room temperature. This is a chemistry characteristic, not a fault with the cell. Keep a spare battery in an inside pocket close to your body and swap it in when the camera is in the cold — the warm spare will perform closer to rated capacity.
My HD170 powers on fine but cuts out after a short time even though the battery indicator showed it was charged — what causes this?
A cell that has been stored at a very low state of charge for an extended period can develop a temporarily elevated internal resistance. The camera powers on from surface charge but cannot sustain the current draw of active recording, and the BMS trips the low-voltage cutoff. Put the battery on charge inside the camera body or via the OEM charger for a full uninterrupted cycle — do not interrupt it partway through. After one complete charge to 4.2V and a normal discharge, most cells recover to stable operation.
