Fits Kenwood TH-D7A, TH-D7E, TH-G71A, and TH-G71E; replaces OEM part numbers PB-39, PB-39H, and PB-38.
7.2V 1100mAh Ni-MH pack delivers sustained transmit current on VHF and UHF without voltage sag during extended operations.
Slide connector with vertical orientation; locking tab seats flush against the radio chassis with no adapter needed.
We bench-tested this pack on a TH-D7A transmit cycle; BMS accepted the cell without dock fault codes on first insertion.
On first insertion into the Kenwood dock, if the charger shows a fault LED, remove the battery, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly — the Kenwood platform requires a clean contact cycle to accept the new cell before charging begins.

Battery Care Tips

🔹 Getting Started

Charge your new battery fully before you use it for the first time. Over the next few charge cycles, run your device down to around 20% before you recharge—this helps the battery perform its best. After that, charge whenever you need to.

🔹 Keep It Healthy

Avoid letting your battery completely drain or staying plugged in constantly. Both extremes wear it out faster. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when you're not using it, since heat damages batteries quickly.

Delivery and Shipping

🔹 Most orders ship the next day, and we use FedEx, UPS, Purolator and other carriers to get them to you. Lithium batteries have to ship by ground only, not air or USPS. Make sure your address is right before you order, because if we have to send it back, you pay for shipping again.

Kenwood TH-D7A / TH-G71A Series — 7.2V Ni-MH Replacement Battery (PB-39)

This is a 7.2V 1100mAh Ni-MH replacement battery for the Kenwood TH-D7A and TH-G71A dual-band handheld transceivers. It also fits the TH-D7E and TH-G71E variants. OEM part numbers replaced: PB-39, PB-39H, and PB-38.

  • TH-D7 and TH-G71 platform fit: Both the TH-D7 and TH-G71 series share the same battery bay dimensions, contact layout, and 7.2V rail. One pack covers both lines without modification.
  • Bench tested on actual hardware: We ran this pack through full charge and transmit-load cycles on a TH-D7A. The BMS held steady through repeated PTT bursts and did not trigger overcurrent cutoff under sustained RF output.
  • First insertion into the charging dock: If the dock shows a fault LED on first insertion, remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat firmly. The Kenwood dock requires a clean contact cycle to complete the BMS handshake before charging begins.

Why the TH-D7A cuts out mid-transmission on a fresh pack

Ni-MH cells ship at storage voltage — typically 1.1–1.2V per cell, well below the 1.2V nominal operating point. On the TH-D7A, the transmit current spike at PTT can pull a partially charged pack below the BMS low-voltage threshold before a single exchange is complete. This is not a faulty battery. Run the pack through one full charge cycle before the first transmission test. After a full charge, the cells deliver their rated 1100mAh and handle the TX current draw without cutoff.

Bar indicator showing one fewer bar than expected after install

The TH-D7A reads pack voltage against fixed thresholds to display the bar indicator — it does not measure capacity directly. A new Ni-MH cell fresh off storage sits at a lower resting voltage than a fully charged cell, so the radio reports one bar short. This is normal behaviour, not a capacity fault. Charge the pack fully and let it rest for 15 minutes before reading the indicator — the display should step up to reflect a resting voltage above 7.8V.

Frequently Asked Questions

My TH-D7A drops to low-power TX mid-shift even though the battery shows two bars — what's happening?

Ni-MH voltage sags under sustained RF output when cells are not fully conditioned. Two bars on the indicator means the resting voltage cleared the threshold, but sag under TX load can still pull the pack below the power-reduction cutoff. Run two full charge-discharge cycles to condition the cells. After conditioning, resting voltage should hold above 7.8V and TX power should stay consistent across a shift.

The Kenwood dock blinks a fault LED and never clears after I insert the new PB-39 pack — how do I fix it?

The dock fault LED usually means the pack voltage is below the charger's acceptance threshold — common with Ni-MH cells that have sat in storage. Remove the pack, wipe the gold contact strip with a dry cloth, and reseat it firmly to ensure a clean contact cycle. If the fault persists, the cells may need a wake-up charge: place the pack in the dock for 10 minutes, remove it, and reinsert — most Kenwood docks will then accept the pack and begin a normal charge cycle.

The new battery pack fits the bay but the radio powers off the instant I press PTT — is the pack defective?

This is a BMS overcurrent trip caused by transmit current spike on an uncharged cell. Ni-MH packs at storage voltage cannot sustain the instantaneous current draw the TH-D7A pulls at key-up. The BMS cuts the circuit to protect the cells — it resets automatically once PTT is released. Charge the pack fully before the first transmission attempt and the BMS will handle PTT current draw without tripping.
